Description This is the third image in my Visions series.

I've been doodling celtic knotwork on paper for over a year now, after finding a tutorial on the web that explained how to create it. This is the first time I've tried to do it properly in any sort of graphics package, and discovered that the techniques I use on paper don't translate well to POVRay. So I had to spend a lot of time - we're talking several hours- just developing the individual blocks that make up the knot (there are only three). Once I had those sorted out, it took me about three more hours to actually create each piece of the knot and place it in the correct position, through a lot of trial and error.

The knot itself is all coded by hand by me. As with the other images in the series, the nebula, starfield and sunburst were created using Chris Colefax's Galaxy include file .

Render time for a 1024 x 768 image: 28 seconds, with the border later added in Photoshop.

Nice knotwork....never could seem to figure the drawing of these out myself....like the celtic art anyway...LOL.

Thanks! It's not actually that hard, once you understand the basic concepts. I learned how to do it after I found a tutorial on the net. If you google for "celtic knotwork tutorial" you should be able to find something...

I've seen a few of them already and I have an art book about it too that I picked up from Dover Publications.. I guess I just don't seem to have the knack for that kind of 'doodling'...LOL

Celtic knots are so cool. If I ever get another tattoo, it'll probably be one of them. Love the blue nebulae that you placed behind the know section.

you are pretty awesome at creating these. i love how it makes you wana just reach out and touch it. Amazing concept and each knot shows that you spent a lot of tlc on it. Amazing job Geoff!!

Actually, I spent less time on each knot than you might think I'm a programmer, so I spent a lot of time figuring out how to break each curve into a number of basic elements, and spent most of my time getting those right. The final design came out a bit different than the one I originally sketched out, because I was having trouble creating the right primitive blocks.

So, I went back to my notepad and sketched out a simpler knot (if you can believe that ). Once I'd done that, I realised that I only needed four basic macros to allow me to create all the shapes I needed. After that, it was simply a mechanical process of selecting the right shape, and rotating and translating it into the right position.

(OK, maybe not so simple for most people. I need to sit there and figure out which way to rotate each piece and how far to move it along each dimension )

And for the record, the knotwork itself is made up of 84 separate pieces. I sat there yesterday and counted them

I'm really glad you liked it though. Now I have to come up with another idea for the fourth in the series...

Ahh, but it did take me a long time. Probably about 7+ hours of work to get it to the finished product.
