Description WIPs of 'Uruporn', which is about a year old.
Preliminary outlines on paper, scanned and coloured in photoshop. :3

Here's the finished work: [link]

And here's the photo reference I used: [link]

EDIT: Even though I had the original removed by dA and decided to put WIPs up in scraps instead... I just want more people to see it, basically, so I'm moving it.
P.S. If you're going to report my stuff just 'cause I used copyrighted photo reference, please do the same to almost my entire gallery. >.> Unnecessary fascist meanness.

YES. Half the time I find I prefer the works-in-progress to the finished piece. (But how do you say that to someone without sounding like you think they wasted their time finishing it?)

Uh, thank you.

hahahaha! i hear you. though it's always so cool to see the evolution! the finished product is just part of it.

and you're very welcome!

i don't know why, but i have a thing for WIPs. haha.
it's just an amazing part of the artwork besides the artwork itself. it reveals a lot of mysteries.
and this WIP is the most amazing WIP i've ever seen. hands down, you're the best.

Crimefish In reply to abusedmember [2009-01-06 19:46:23 +0000 UTC]

YES. Me too! It's one thing seeing the finished piece, but it's something else altogether seeing it come to life, and finding the quirks of how different artists operate, that you can often only see in the WIPs and not in the finished work. It's like watching a foetus developing.

Well, thank you! That's very high praise. This is one of the few digital paintings I've done where the guidelines are still present in the end result. I think that helped somehow.

i think its fine actually, that you used photoref in this sense.

1. excellent job
2. i think the images are pretty obviously Gazette's
3. hard to say you actually got him to pose for you
4. 'cause if he did then you're one lucky fish.

Thingy you plug into the computer, to do digital work using something shaped more like a pen than a mouse. The main difference is, the pen is pressure sensitive, so all you have to do is press harder or softer to make a difference to the size and opacity of the photoshop brush you're using. :3

Thank you! What a lovely compliment.

You don't like them? x3 Like, as people, or from an artistic perspective? I guess they probably have the same likable to unlikable ratio as any other country, but I do find their youth culture pretty inspiring artistically.

but i agree, they are inspiring at least in visual arts for me! im not a racist either so im sorry if i made myself look that way *shame*

Well, it did kind of sound that way. But I thought I'd make sure before I decide I don't like you very much. XD
I think it's a really great thing that you can be inspired by them even if they're not your cup of tea. It shows you have an open mind.

Mhn... I just don't get it.
Many artist here (me too) use copyrighted pictures to make their arts.
I don't understand their policy...
Well, just f*** them, this work is way too wonderful.

They said if it's too much like the reference, it's violating copyright. u.u which I guess is okay, but I don't get their process. They only delete a deviation that violates a copyright like that if someone actually reports it. >.> That's why there are so many crazy popular portraits of celebrities still on dA.

I completely understand someone reporting copyright violations, but I don't understand them being so erratic as to only report a few here and there. o.0
Thank you, my dear. You're very sweet.

Another example of deviantart being retarded.......
Ahh its so cool to be able to see how you work these up. What i absolutely love about this is the lineart!! It looks fantastic and i was a little surprised at the way you do the hair shading in the lineart!! very cool!!! Same for the lips. I love how you put those dark black shadows in, I would never be so confident to put them in so strongly.

The link for the photo ref wasn't working but the finished looks excellent!!

Crimefish In reply to kitten-chan [2007-08-19 09:46:04 +0000 UTC]

It really bugged me at the time, but I think it's nice of them not to delete stuff with copyrighted photo reference until someone actually reports it. I just don't know why people report so erratically. There's copyright violations in DDs, for god's sake, and no one batts an eyelid.

Ah, thank you! I love to see WIPs, it makes me enjoy the finished piece even more. :3 Ahhah, it was a lot easier when I painted on scanned lineart. I'm going to start doing that again after I finish the piece I'm working on now. I have a hard time getting the proportion right on digital pieces because of all the zooming and scrolling involved, so it takes longer to finish stuff without lineart.

No matter how it looks, if you act confident with it, people will assume you know exactly what you're doing, and they'll respect you for it. 8D;;

Anyway. Thank you very much. I appreciate it.
