It reminds me of a certain theme. There will come a day were our sun will fall apart and consume the only Earth we have. And all our races great achievements will all be for naught. We will be forgotten, no one will remember us. No monuments to be seen, since it's probably all destroyed. Will we be remembered? Will our hardships will all go in vain?
ย A character from John Green's "The Fault in Our Stars" call this a fear of "oblivion". Some people wish to die with some sort of monument, something they'll be remembered by, like a heroic act. I too once, feared that my life will be insignificant if I don't do something significant. Something that'll make me remembered by.
But I found out that it's the relationships we form that makes our life significant. Our lives will make an impact that'll carry on within the people that met us in their memories, and (this will be a bit corny) in their hearts. Even if I don't get to do something heroic, don't experience reincarnation, or don't go to heaven, and just get sucked in the void of oblivion; the things I experienced, seen, met, loved, hated, and all that, I had the privilege to feel all of what the universe gave me.ย
Hopefully, on my deathbed, I'd say something along the lines of: "I had a good run".

I'll avoid the obvious religious routes that one might pursue in reponding to your deep comment. I have my views but they will obviously not resonate with everyone. Suffice it to say the image contains the cross.
Your fear of oblivion is held by many I'm sure and well described in the first paragraph. In mystical terms - can I see myself looking down on my own grave stone and thinking someone is tending the grave? Maybe not but the monument in the heart of those loved ones left behind is so much more significant and meaningful.
It's an interesting thought to apply to the current commemorations of those lost in the Great War. It's not necessarily the overall or detailed history that is remembered but the individual heroics, sacrifices and sometimes pointless futility of individual actions within the context of that conflict that move our hearts more. Some of those poignant stories are greater monuments and warnings to future generations than all the grandiose or even the humble individual stones laid as memorials.
At the end, as cricketers (and baseball players?) will always say, I just hope I had a 'good innings' and people remember a few good shots! Be lucky my friendย

A scene that might have inspired Bram Stoker. This was taken only a few miles from Whitby where he was inspired to write Dracula. The sky adds to the image and perhaps makes it what it is...ย
