Crouching on a cabbage leaf,
There’s a mantis praying.
Sneak up very quietly -
You will hear him saying:
Bless the cricket,
Bless the slug.
Bless the fly
And ladybug.
Bless the aphid
And the bee.
Bless the spider
And the flea.
Bless the lacewing.
Bless the gnat.
Make them healthy.
Make them fat.
Guide them over.
Light their way.
That’s all I ask –
These things I pray.

It was very cooperative and posed quite happily. Having taken a few shots on a window frame, it even allowed me to relocate it to the more natural foliage

They certainly are but this one was not quite up to hunting in the early morning chill. They are patient stalkers not chasers like the dragonfly

I guess all early SciFi writers drew on their experiences of the natural world. Film makers then did what they could with prosthetics to reveal their ideas until computer graphics came along and made the images really come alive

Beautiful insects, but they can be pretty dangerous if you're a bug.

I think they can be surprising vulnerable to predation by birds and lizards themselves.
Only a small percentage make it past the early stages apparently
