I swear, I measured various proportions on this while I was making the sketch. And I swear things seemed more or less correct (well, except for one mistake I made in adjusting...er, long story...). And I swear they don't even seem too far off now when I re-measure...Still, the longer I look at this the more I feel like the proportions are grossly off (I especially feel that the woman is too big for the horse...in order to preserve my sanity I have decided that she's just riding a pony instead...). But whatever; it's practice; it's a lot of things I haven't tried before, and except for the grass, I like how a lot of the actual painting part of the process went. I especially like how the clothes turned out; I don't recall having painted clothes before (which must mean I paint very few people, and none which aren't naked, I guess).
I was so excited when I found the main reference here on dA (first link below) that I wanted to paint it right away...but I feel like I didn't do the reference justice. Which just means I'll have to re-do it sometime in the near future, and make it BETTER, MWAHAHA...

What really stood out to me here was that the unicorn is obviously something other than a horse with a spike glued to its head. I also am impressed that it is a fairly orthodox unicorn, one that could easily be an embodiment of purity & beauty, (far too many I've seen embody either the disco or the rubbish-heap *gag*)

What seems off about it to me is that the unicorn is lower on the plain than the horse, but then I don't know if the unicorn is meant to be physically smaller than the horse in the first place.

I actually deliberately put the unicorn lower in the photo to accentuate the fact that the unicorn is, in fact, supposed to be much smaller than the horse. I thought it might seem a little odd, since unicorns these days normally look like horses themselves. I wanted to make a point to distinguish between the two. Thanks for the comment!

If it makes it any better, it's actually not that far off, proportional wise. The horse doesn't measure much more than pony size irl, and with the hair and the cloak, the rider probably just appear a bit bigger. I don't think that it's that bad att all, actually!

I'm so glad you like it! Glad to hear I'm not that far off (and, in all honesty, I've seen a few pics on dA since that have had FAR worse proportions than this one, so I feel much better about it now, lol. I still want to do another version someday, though, if for no other reason than it's such a beautiful photo to work from!

The light is amazing! I'd love to see a tutorial on the sky and plants. The surface of the rocks look great, too.

Actually, this is the first painting on which I haven't used salt in ages. I've been trying to get the hang of getting some good texture with just water. It seems that the key is to wait until just the right moment...just when the area no longer looks damp, and then speckle it with a wet--but not too wet--brush. It's taken me quite a bit of practice to figure it out, and just as often now I get it wrong as right, LOL. Thank you!

At first glance she does seem a little too big for the horse, but not when I look more closely. I think that big dark cloak is making her appear bigger than she is.

LOL...I think you're right about the cloak...what happened with the cloak is the "er, long story" in the description. Long story short: I had to lengthen the horse when I traced it (trace the front half, move the paper, trace the back half), and I forgot that doing so ended up making the cloak wider than it was supposed to be.

The horse is 1/4 too short and 1/4 an inch to short length wise. The woman is just perfect. All you could have done was make the horse taller and longer just by 1/4 inch both ways, and make the legs just a tad longer, too. Better chance trying on the next art piece.

Or you could have just made the legs longer by 1/8 of a inch. Other than that, it's a lovely piece.

Thank you for the input; I truly appreciate it! Regardless of the anatomical issues, I still had a blast painting it, I learned a lot, and there are a lot of things about it I still like.
