Description Something I did because I wanted to be really girly and do a mermaid. I also wanted to recycle the pose I used for Ariel on my long-ago deviation "Disney's Dreamers," because I liked it then, and I wanted to do it better. It was very relaxing to color this one-- I finished her in about a day or so.

I'd like to consider this one my first upload of 2009, even though she isn't. It's just that the two before her weren't personal art, and this one is, so I kind of think she's allowed the title.

Hope you enjoy random mermaid!

lol Yes, by the way, I purposely made it look like she had legs under her fin. I just think it looks so graceful that way.

It just so happens that I do in fact use Photoshop CS3 to color my work. I know Adobe Illustrator is a good (some say better) program to use to digitally paint artwork, but I've always used Photoshop and it gets the job done. xD

Thank you for the comment! I'm so glad you like it!

Ehh... I'm not a really good source for prices, but I think you can find Photoshop CS3 somewhere between 200-500 dollars, depending where you're getting it and if the program you buy is used or not. If you look around on some websites you could probably gauge its average price that way. CS3 might even go down a little, since CS4 just came out. If you want to save money (since I know all Adobe programs are mad expensive), you can even go back to older versions of Photoshop, since the older they are, the lower the price. The downside of that, though, is that you won't know the completely-up-to-the-very-minute version, and that's unfortunately a problem if you're looking to enter art professionally. Really, you just have to do the research on the software, compare prices online, look into where you might want to buy it from (whether from a store or the Adobe website or Amazon) and go with what feels right.

Ooooh, I really like the shading and highlights here. The orange and the blue green look so good together. I really like how you've put all that sea-stuff on her for a brassiere rather than the traditional Ariel clamshells, it looks really organic and interesting. and that she looks like she has legs under her fishtail is also something I haven't really seen before!

yay mermaids!

The mermaid is lovely. You have a great sense for details and your lighting has improved, though it was always good. I like the values in the background too. It makes a good illusion of space but it's simple.

I'm not crazy on the composition here though. She needs more room around her. 3 places on her fin, her hair, and her hips all make tangents with the sides of the composition and her arm is cropped at an odd place. It anchors her too much and makes her static.

beautiful!! I see what you mean about adding 'legs' to the tail, it does look a lot more graceful - aswell as adding more interest and uniqueness to the design

Hehehe I'm glad you agree! I've always loved that design since I was little. The hint that legs are under the tail has just been such an intriguing idea to me. Thank you for the comment!
