Indeed this film I will admit I was on the verge of not watching. After having viewed Mike Judge's Idiocracy back in 2008, and then the following year of this film hitting theatres called "Kick-Ass" [half of the fictional film in the 'World of The Play konwn as Idiocracy' known as "Ass" ]--I told myself that I would not 'stupify' [pun intended] myself by viewing a film which 'contributed to the Idiocracy.'

However... after seeing high and positive ratings of the film and hearing of its viewing success and even recalling that I had heard of the film simply because it was an advertisement on YouTube.com... I decided that after having seen "The Shrimp On The Barbie" this year... I certainly could not be further stupefied. To certainly be honest, after viewing the film, I will admit that I did indeed say aloud, "WOW! That WAS good! " and it was. What I compare this superb film to or am currently deciding to compare it "two" [another pun intended =3] is "Watchmen" meets "The Kingdom" with undertones of another comparison "two" Gang-Driven "Stay Cool" meets Walt Disney's "Sky High." The mix of 'Everyday-hero' meets 'normal guy who doesn't fit in' is honestly a rather consistently covered topic of today's world within the realm of 'our current reality.' I truly enjoyed the very opening which had me seriously cracking up!

The commentary and camera angles [this is the very first time I do believe I have noticed that the Cinematography of a film contributes just as much to comedy, drama or empathy as does the story, sounds, music and characters. GOOD JOB! =3] on the 'Armenian Guy with some mental problems' seriously had me laughing when he is expected to fly and creams the Taxi from over 50 stories up and flat-out-dies. TOTALLY expected-but-unexpected [I had NO idea what was going to happen! But just 'knew' homeboy was going to slam into the concrete from the music and camera shots and implied comedy/drama undertone which is so prominent throughout this film ].

I truly do believe that "Kick-Ass" first attempt at "Kicking-Ass" in the realm of crime was VERY well done and had a good mix of reality and comedy in it all at once. To be completely honest, you do just do not expect this high school kid to get stabbed while trying to stop two car-jackers. Also, the introduction was funny because the would-be-car-jackers laugh at him instead of standing in fear or in awe of him which is opposite effect of your typical comic story or criminal-meets-masked-crime-fighter.

Further... I REALLY did not expect the 'hit-and-run' accident which is both SO off the wall-yet-believable, I truly did not know whether to laugh or shout "OH MY GOD!!" [I did both ] The title of the film and the hero's name I do believe makes a lot of sense. When you watch the film and get that this is the mind of your typical High School student who is NOT trying to impress anyone, but at the same time feels that he doesn't fit in [which obviously bothers him] and doesn't have a girlfriend [which obviously bothers him more when rumors begin that he may not be interested in girls when he truly is]--the name and title is completely understandable.

The 'bad guys' and the 'true trained heroes' in my humble opinion make a lot of sense. An ex-police officer who lost his wife and did not know what had happened to his child. A young girl who has known nothing but what her father has taught her since age 5 and being raised by a cop-friend of his up to that point--which was self-defense and survival. [understatement <.< Daddy has sniper rifles and Bazookas; 'Lives underground' and trains his daughter how to get shot--with a bullet proof vest on--which is NOT implied at first. O.O]

Mixed with his rage and hatred of being framed for a crime he did not commit--and the loss of his wife who was far from an independent woman--there is truly no doubt in my mind that a character as he could and would truly exist. In essence, the 'hero' is a 'Serpico' or 'honest cop' who was placed in a similar situation to 'Clyde Sheldon' in 'Law Abiding Citizen' of being wronged by the legal system. Near the end, I truly did believe that the director and cinematographer truly did "Kick-Ass!" when the "First-Person" perspective was taken of "Hit Girl" [also known as Mindy or "Little GoGo" (to me character reminds one of a 'good version' of 'GoGo' from Kill Bill Vol. 1 )] shooting up baddies in the dark wearing 'night vision goggles' attempting to save her father and the 'lame hero' at this point known as "Kick-Ass." I will admit that near the closing, I was I was very impressed with the use of an 'FPS' camera scene.

This is the second time that I have seen the "First Person Shooter" (FPS) perspective made popular by video games like "Wolfenstein," "Doom," "Cyclones," "Heretic" and "Quake"--utilized in film. The first time I say "First Person Perspective" used during an action film was in the DooM movie--which I was throughly disappointed with [standing and LAUGHING 'infected people?' Oh COME ON. ] I was THOUROUGHLY impressed with the FPS scene in "Kick-Ass!" The 'Matrix Style' "through the double doors and on to the final floor' scenario was well done when the gate-keepers this time are not cops--but instead armed men connected to a drug cartel and the only person standing there is an 11-or-12-something-pigtailed-brunette-blue-eyed-girl claiming she lost her mommy and daddy [which I honestly thought was an AWESOME pun because she was being honest ].

The shoot-out scene I do think had a lot of pep, as the people were thrown off by the size and speed of a little girl who was trained to kill and who now was given a motive to bring down their drug-and-murder cartel as per the fresh-death of her father. The 'Jet Pack' and 'Ride-The-Bazooka's-Rocket' scene were HILARIOUS to me and I honestly did thank the story writer [Matthew Vaughn, Frank Miller & John Romita] + excellent film director [Matthew Vaughn] for keeping the closing understandable as well as within the realm of reality but just over-the-top enough for breed as a 'fictional theatrical film.'

Indeed, I had not realized it until just this moment when I decided to go to Wikipedia and see the roster of Producers, Writers, and Directors, but indeed this did have a '300' and 'Sin City' vibe about it that shouted 'Frank Miller!' I have not ever been a big comic book reader [I have consistently been into animated action: usually 2D style and anime films alongside video games and Walt Disney Features while growing up.

Ironically I enjoyed reading 'pictureless' books whenI read while growing up which lead me to feel 'More Adult' and allowed me to imagine from description how characters and people's actual stories in Self-Growth and books on Humanity would look beyond the text ]. I see that the Screenwriter [Matthew Vaughn] is also the Director and head-producer as well [Triple-Threat as some call us =3] and is backed by Brad Pitt, Kris Thykier, Adam Bohling, Tarquin Pack and David Reid! Go Go Mr. Vaughn!

I truly will say that as an initial critic of this film who had decided NOT to watch it at first afraid to be less-intrigued than initially thought--please take it from me: WATCH THIS FILM! It truly is as the title would suggest: "Kick-Ass!"
