Disney mermaids are fun as hell to draw and I'll forever be that little 8 year old girl who wants to be Ariel when I grow up (but a slightly less naive and stupid version)... but dudes the ocean's a tough place. There's sharks and creepy things no one wants to think about and oil spills and shit... mermaids need to be a little more prepared.This one's mildly prepared. There's a sword. Right there. And some stuff in some pouches. Maybe magic. Who the hell knows. I don't even remember drawing this.
(BTW I know, red hair and green tail. But no, not supposed to be any version of Ariel whatsoever)

Really a nifty concept, indeed. Melee combat in water must be difficult, I imagine. I just wonder where that force behind an edged weapon might come from. All the same, really cool.

She is lovely, dear! Definitley looks like she can handle that blade, but she's got a softness about her too that suggests she hasn't completely lost her optimism.

Y'know, if this WAS Ariel, this is the Ariel that I'd want my niece actually looking up to. An Ariel that does some SERIOUS ass-kicking instead of waiting around for her prince :3 Moony likes!
But yeah, this mermaid's pretty awesome. No idea how she forged metal underwater (maybe she stole the sword from a shipwreak? That'd be awesome) but she looks great.

Let me know if you could do that, or if you've already done that, or whatever. I think you should go through and do a portrait of all the Disney Princesses using this same theme.

I really like the muted colors you use here, as well as the subtle, undefined scales.

Dun know about a sword... Frankly, Mermaids shouldn't even wear clothes - what would be the point? Where would they get the metal for swords? How would they FORGE!? (Well, stealing from humans, but still.
