Some one on Tumblr aaaages ago mentioned the idea of a muscled toned mermaid. It took me ages to draw it, and it's not QUITE what I was picturing but it's close. The arms were the hardest thing ever to pose. BUT, I wanted a fit muscled badass mermaid... who was also very feminine and soft.Related content

It makes too much sense. Β They swim EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME. Β Ariel wouldn't have been that little, smooth-skinned waif, but a toned, long-muscled endurance swimmer. Β With the abs of a dolphin.

I've read the other comments. It's true that swimmers do have this much muscular mass, but would it also be true for mermaids? Unlike swimming on the surface, I'm guessing the arms would get in the way while travelling underwater, meaning that most of the work would be done by the tail. Still, very nice drawing.

That's not how a woman's abs work and women don't have an apollo's belt, were you going for a male mermaid with breasts maybe? Because that is definitely a male upper body

I can't see a mermaid being all skinny because they are swimming yes the arms aren't the major swimming thing but they need to use the arms to turn right? am I messing up my mermaid swimming physics?

Dude, yes. Anatomy is ass. I've been working hard at improving it as far as actual... reality. Not easy! But anatomy books and random tutorials are incredibly useful.
