I've been in a painting rut the last week, sketching like crazy but nothing caught my fancy to paint. Finally I broke out of it thanks to two supportive people!
It's Entirely done in Corel Painter X with a Bamboo Fun.
Time: about 5 hours.
I used this photo as a reference [link] absolutely beautiful girl!
I very recently discovered a "new" (to me) artist on here called Cali Rezo [link] and this drawing is very inspired by her paintings. She is absolutely brilliant!
EDIT: I decided to do a rework of this drawing based on the really good critique I got.

I like the composition and the colors. I think that the eyes are a little too big. But the details in them are nice.

I tried to make it a little "looser" and more traditional looking.
I can't take credit for the anatomy since I used reference, ^_^
If I look at something, I can paint it but doing it from imagination isn't as easy. I've been sketching a ton lately, so I'm getting a lot better at facial anatomy, but when I try to draw bodies without reference they look wrong. >_<
Practice, practice, practice I guess.

I definitely know what you mean about looser looking! I love that soft airy look some artists manage to create in portraits...but just can't seem to work it out for myself.
Using reference is the best way to get better at anything in my oppinion, It's what I've always done if I need to work on drawing something.

But it's a good thing to have something to strive for, and I definitely needed some new input to start on the next step. Experimenting, and letting myself "fail" is always something that bring me forward. I just seem to forget it between each time. >_<
I'm pretty sure you'll be able to achieve any look you want to, you have the right attitude.

Not exactly softer, I don't know...
I am definitely going to fix the flaws Chaotic-AlterEgo helped making me see, but right now I have other more pressing projects that need attention.

Oh yes please! That would be fantastic! I've been longing for some good substance critique to help me progress! Every little thing gets logged in my "how to improve" brain folder.
Don't hesitate to be completely honest, I'm not one of those people who say "give me a critique", and means "please stroke my ego!". I honestly want to improve.

Thank you so much! This is very helpful. A lot of what you said are things I was thinking about myself as well, but wasn't completely sure about. I'm often quite hopeless when trying to critique my own work.
This is my first try with using digital chalk in Painter, that's the roughness you were pointing out, and even though I like the loose, more "traditional" feeling I agree with you it is too rough and looks unfinished. I was probably so happy about getting something done again I didn't finish. >_<
I'm happy you liked the colours, they are sort of new to me. Lately I've been looking at a lot of the good artist on here and been thinking "I love his/her painting style, but why does everybody seem to use so much grey tones and desaturated colours?". I am starting to look at colours differently, it's as if they are starting to try to tell me something. I can't really explain, but when I was younger I was always drawn to cool colours and thought anything with neon blues and purples was amazing but I'm finding that I'm more and more drawn to warm colours now. I guess I'm trying to warm up my palette but still trying to balance it out with a dash of cool.
I'm definitely going to revamp this using your advice. I feel like this has potential that hasn't been nurtured. Poor thing. ^_^

Yes, I should read up on colour theory. I remember is school I thought it was really difficult, it might be good to try and understand it again in a more "adult" brain. Hehe.

Yes, it is very inspired by cali Rezo, and thereby influenced by Gustav Klimt as well.
