Description
Following the dramatic approach, the patrol ship set down gently. The distant roar of machines died down, leaving the command center silent safe for rattling computers. A few decks below, the doors of the hangar opened with a whine. The hull was creaking, coming to terms with the sudden change in temperature and pressure.
Still fixating the screens, Captain Herrim looked outside into the desert night. Hard beams of light from the lower lamps pierced through the settling sand.
"Landing party ready?", captain Herrim inquired. All stations on the hangar deck confirmed.
"Good. Launch MGEs one through four. They are to first secure a perimeter, and then begin recon."

The positrons rattling noises appeared in the early books too, and since they were based on ancient Arkonide designs, those probably rattled to.
The Arkonide's supposedly built Atlantis when they colonized Earth, so if they're computers rattled, they were better than the ones we have now! We were barely living in caves...

"Rattling Computers"! A nice nostalgic notion .... though...I doubt that those computers rattle in the 2.000nds or 3.000nds. May be that the crew programmed them that way to impress Perry Rhodan when he possibly visits the ship? For those illiterate with the series: PR grew up in the fifties and landed on the moon in the early seventies. The computers of that era rattled indeed. ;-)

Ah, who knows. We've barely seen a century of computer development and sure they've gone more silent, but whose to say they won't get rattling again once we have them quantum-compute interstellar anomalies on a starship a thousand years into the future?
On a serious note though, I like to imagine all PR technology retains that beautiful early sci-fi rattling and clunkyness. For that more modern feel, we've got NEO!

Mit etwas Glück wird es eine Storyline. Die Erstfassung in Englisch, aber wenn ich erst den Blog wieder auf Vordermann gebracht habe, gibt es eine umfangreichere deutsche Übersetzung.
