Temple Guardians — Description

In reverence of the Japanese Temple Guardians (Kongo Rikishi), i.e. Agyo and Ungyo, 14th century, that can be observed bilaterally to the Buddha Amida Nyorai, 16th century, Amsterdam. By the 6th century, Buddhism had spread as far as the islands of Japan. The Buddha Amida Nyorai is holding his hands on his lap in the meditating gesture and he governs the highest of the nine levels of the Western Paradise where rebirth is the highest attainment for a living being.
