Cartelles fue un mono que vivió en lo que hoy es Brasil en el Pleistoceno. Es el mayor primate del Nuevo Mundo que se conoce, con una longitud estimada en alrededor de 1.70 m y alrededor de 30 kilos de peso. Por su gran tamaño y robustez se cree que pasaba mucho más tiempo en el suelo que sus parientes modernos, lo que le habría expuesto a predadores como jaguares, dientes de sable y el perro salvaje Protocyon. Aparte de vivir en grupos, su gran tamaño y aparente habilidad para rugir de forma similar a los monos aulladores modernos (¿quizá aún más fuerte?), le habrían ayudado a defenderse de éstos predadores, especialmente si como los monos terrícolas modernos era más agresivo que sus contrapartes arborícolas.
Cartelles podría ser parte de la inspiración detrás de las muchas historias de monos gigantes que se cuentan en algunas partes de Brasil incluso ahora.

Cartelles was a monkey that lived in what is today Brazil during the Pleistocene. It is the largest primate of the New World known thus far, with an estimated length of about 1.70 m and around 30 kg. Because of its large size and build it is believed to have spent a lot of time on the ground compared to its modern relatives, which would have exposed it to predators such as jaguars, sabercats, and the wild dog Protocyon. Other than living in groups, its large size and apparent ability to roar (like howler monkeys but, maybe louder?) would have helped it defend itself from these predators, especially if, like Old World ground dwelling monkeys, it became more aggressive than its arboreal counterparts.
Cartelles could be partial inspiration behind the many folk stories of unusually large monkeys told in some Brazilian regions even today.
