Description
Well, it has most certainly been an exciting two months. With Palutena, Pac-Man and Mii Fighters being revealed at E3 and Lucina, Robin and Captain Falcon being unveiled in the newest mini-Direct, there has been quite a considerable amount of Smash-related news as of late. That being said, I felt it was necessary to update my roster. Honestly, a majority of the characters I had chosen on my previous roster were confirmed (Palutena, Pac-Man, Mii, Robin, Captain Falcon, Mr. Game and Watch), but I chose to replace Wonder Red, Chibi-Robo, Tingle, and Paper Mario, as well as update the characters' artworks.55 Characters?
Sakurai has already revealed a considerable amount of characters, and the news will only continue to flood in as the release date gets closer and closer. Clearly, there are going to be more characters than originally anticipated. In addition, I believe that the originally planned roster has been finalized, meaning that the development team had time to create clone characters, such as Lucina. With Bandai Namco working in conjunction with Sakurai's team, a greater amount of characters would not be surprising to me in the least.
Clone characters?
With the confirmation of Lucina as a clone, I firmly believe that we will be seeing more clones. As for who they are, my prediction is that there will be roughly five. Link's clone would be Toon Link, Pit's would be Dark Pit/Pittoo, Fox's would be Falco and/or Wolf, Marth's would be Lucina, and Ness' would be Lucas. Ganondorf would be decloned, as his moves could easily be passed onto Captain Falcon as variations of his normal specials, or onto a separate character (Black Shadow or Mach Rider) as future DLC.
Additional Explanation:
- Dixie Kong was added because it appears possible that Kid Icarus (Palutena and Dark Pit), Pokemon (Mewtwo and Greninja), and Fire Emblem (Lucina and Robin) could all be receiving two new representatives, so two for Donkey Kong would not be outside the realm of possibility. Dixie could be physically and functionally similar to Diddy, if necessary, but with unique special attacks/Final Smash.
- King K. Rool is one of the top three characters I believe should and needs to be added to Smash, and I don't even like him. Despite his lack of recent relevancy, he is still the most recurring villain in Donkey Kong history with a wide variety of attacks to choose from to form a moveset.
- Isaac is one of the few ATs from Brawl that I believed could be upgraded to playable, along with Little Mac, Saki, Waluigi, Tingle, and Lyndis. Isaac has yet to be shown and Golden Sun, while not overly popular, has still stood the test of time, with Dark Dawn being released on the DS fairly recently. Although Robin functions as a magic swordsman also, Isaac's moves would be so vastly different that it truly wouldn't affect his chances in the slightest.
- Dark Pit is, as I believe, a secret playable clone. He was teased in the Palutena trailer, like Game and Watch in Pac-Man's, but neither were given official banners because they are meant to be secret unlockable characters. Dark Pit would essentially function as a clone of Pit, perhaps with a few alterations thrown in here and there.
- Mewtwo is a character that I truly hope returns. Out of all of the Melee cuts, this made the least amount of sense to me, as he was a unique and popular character. If he is not included in the base game, I pray that Sakurai includes him as DLC.
- Ridley may have been teased in the first Nintendo Direct, but what his status is in the game has yet to be revealed. I believe that Sakurai, as always, has been trolling the Smash community. He has been a highly requested character from the beginning, and I believe that Sakurai may have the technology to finally make him a viable fighter.
- Shulk seems like an obvious choice to me. Extremely popular, relevant, has another game coming out next year, and has a moveset that would be easy to implement in Smash. Come on, Sakurai. See the cash cow right in front of your eyes.
- Takamaru, while not a character I like, has a lot going for him. He makes perfect sense as a retro rep, and Sakurai himself said that if he appeared in another game, he would be added to Smash. Well, he was in Nintendo Land, so there's your confirmation.

August will be when more are revealed. So ness coming back is still there along with Roy and canon oh and snake if konami don't mind of course.

I'm almost positive that we'll get another Direct (or another Livestream, a la the one for Robin and Lucina) in August, as you said. Ness is most certainly a possibility, and I can almost guarantee that he will remain in the series. Roy I really don't see coming back now that FE has four reps, but it's not deconfirmed as of yet. I don't personally believe Snake will return either, due to Nintendo's diminished relationship with Konami, but again, anything is possible with him as well!

Of the original 12, Ness and Jigglypuff are left to be announced. I hope (I HOPE) they return as playable characters. Please, to get that sad vision out of my head.
Mewtwo had better return, also. No one was happy when he was cut from Brawl (to my knowledge, no reason was given why), and if he doesn't return here, the anger from fans will grow substantially.
I actually thought Diddy and Dixie would appear to function as a tag-team, similar to the Ice Climbers. That way, if K. Rool was included, we'd have the 4 staple characters from the DK series in only 3 slots. A shame that didn't happen, but I do hope Dixie appears. To keep in sync with the "Forbidden 7" line.
If Meta Knight returns, he's gonna have to be toned down. A LOT.
We did get a picture of the Great Fox in the "Pic of the Day," so we might get a Star Fox reveal soon. Who it will be remains to be seen.

You and I think quite alike, my friend.
I can almost guarantee that both of them will return, but they might not be revealed before release because they could be unlockable, as Jiggs always has been. I didn't even use Mewtwo very much, but I was shocked that he didn't return. Out of all of the Melee cuts, he was the only non-clone. It just didn't make any sense to my why they cut him. I totally thought Diddy and Dixie would be together! For the same reasons as you, too. I'd like most of the Forbidden Seven playable...except for Plusle and Minun. Agreed on Meta-Knight, without a doubt. And I hope Falco or Wolf will get revealed soon. As much as I'd like Krystal, I don't see it happening in this installment.

This is a pretty good roster! I still have faith in a Rhythm Heaven character though.
In terms of newcomers, I'm personally expecting the following, along with the ones who are already confirmed: Shulk, Ridley, King K. Rool, Ghirahim, Takamaru, and Chorus Kids (or any other RH character). My current roster is this: i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss…
I also think that Isaac, Dixie Kong, Captain Toad, Dark Pit, Impa, Bandanna Dee, Sceptile, Krystal, Chibi Robo, and maybe an F-Zero chacter like Black Shadow might be added in, later on, as DLC.

I could see a Rhythm Heaven representative make it into the game, but I really hope it's not the Chorus Kids. I'd even be fine with just Marshall, I just don't want three of them for whatever reason. I could definitely see those newcomers being the last ones left to be revealed.
Agree with almost all of those too. I think Captain Toad might wait until the next installment, since his new game was just announced. Although my only concern, despite actually wanting him in, is that he can't jump...which might pose problems lol Pokemon: ORAS might've been announced a little bit too late for Sceptile to be included. I'd love for Isaac, Impa, Krystal, Chibi and Impa to be included though!

Personally I'd want the Chorus Kids the most. I'd also be pretty happy with Karate Joe. Either way I think we will get some sort of RH rep, because a Sneaky Spirit is a Smash Run enemy!
As for Captain Toad's inability to jump - that didn't stop Olimar!
You bring up a good point about him and also Sceptile though; it might be too short-notice... Although, knowing Sakurai, he could have something up his sleeve - Apparently he added Greninja far before the release of X&Y and even before Greninja was a fully-fledged pokemon. Heck, he based Greninja's Moveset off of concept art! So Sakurai clearly plans way ahead, so I still have high hopes for Sceptile and Captain Toad.
Plus, Sceptile be a good way to replace Ivysaur as Smash's grass type representative.

Excellent selection, follyoftheforbidden. it's better than that so-called Gematsu leak. All I need to return are Ness and Ganondorf. I'm basically begging Sakurai to confirm them... Everyone he adds, that's cool, too.

Thank you so much! I was not a fan of Gematsu either, so I am glad that is has essentially been debunked. Don't worry, I'm almost certain that those two will return. And if by some strange turn of events Ganondorf isn't included in this game, there's always Hyrule Warriors where he's pretty much confirmed at this point

I completely agree! I think getting 25 characters is pushing it a bit, but the more the merrier, in my opinion.

If Dark Pit still actually manages to get in the game, I don't think he'll be a clone character. Uprising has a lot of unique different weapons and weapon classes that both Pit and Dark Pit have access to. Not to mention his main weapon though is the Silver Bow *Which is no different than Pit's weapon* he has his own weapon *Dark Pit Staff, and in which he uses within Uprising* Considering Sakurai is implementing more things from Uprising why wouldn't he use this fine opportunity to give a character *Who strives to be different than his original and prove he's not just a copy* not only a unique moveset away from his counterpart, his own weapon and once again show off some of the different qualities from a game he's clearly proud of. Not to mention it'll give the same feeling in which we got from the Kirby series in SSBB, where Kirby was alone until SSBB where he got two important chars from his series added. Pit may have the same, he already got one other important character within the series *Though I'm not fond her*, why not add another to balance it out.
I'm only paying attention to him on this roster.

If Dark Pit were ever to be implemented as a character in Smash, I would want him to be as unique as possible. He definitely has plenty to work with, like you said, especially with the Dark Pit Staff. I just believe that he was added last minute, like Lucina, as extra characters that act as (semi-)clones to inflate the roster a bit. It's not that I want that, it's just that I believe is what will happen. Although, knowing Sakurai, he could definitely play some favorites and make Dark Pit completely unique. He is a mad genius, that Sakurai

I was really under the impression he was going to be the one revealed on Monday..but..guess not...I just really hope if he does make it he won't just be some silly clone. That will be a huge character potential wasted.
