Harper was excited. He had purchased the most recent Virtual Role Playing Game from the company known as Virtual Worlds Unlimited. The game was simply called Adventure and took place in an ever changing world. Like most games from Virtual Worlds Unlimited, it had an optional hypnosis feature which he intended to use.
However, before Harper could actually play the game, he had to create a character. That was not his favorite part of the game. Sometimes he spent nearly an hour just trying to come up with a name. Then came all the other decisions like species, gender, class, physical features, outfits, and adjustable stats. He wished he could speed up the process.
Many of the employees who made the game, especially at the executive level, were corrupt, which showed in their sloppy and often unsafe work. Harper was going to get his wish whether he actually wanted it or not. Before he finished his character, he activated the hypnosis feature. The game was not meant to work that way. However, instead of giving Harper a warning or simply not allowing it, the decision was passed on to the next person to design a character.
Kara was a girl in her early teens. She too had purchased the game Adventure and was looking forward to playing it. What she did not know was that her character and Harper's character were linked. The changes made to her character were also made to his.
First she selected the name of her character. She decided on the name Andromeda and was pleased to find out it was available. Since Harper was using the hypnosis feature, this caused him to think his name had always been Andromeda. Next Kara selected the species of her character. She decided on a green skinned forest dweller which made Harper think this is what he had always been.
Kara selected a female character without giving it much thought and went on to class. She chose hunter because the species she selected was good at hunting. Andromeda, actually Harper, thought "she" was a hunter and had always been female. Kara selected the physical features and outfit of her character. Finally she added the adjustable stats which she kept balanced. Then she was ready to play.
Harper, convinced "she" was Andromeda, was also ready to play. If the game were working properly it would not allow more than one character to have the same name, but it was not working properly. When either Andromeda did something the computer was bound to get confused about which character did what. This would inevitably lead to errors that would be unpredictable.
