Cappitron’s Short-Circuited Rant

Oh, you’d best believe I, a grown-ass man, sat down and watched the Transformers Animated pilot (this was originally posted a few days after the pilot aired, and obviously more rockin’ episodes have come out afterwards). And you’d best believe my statement holds true: the series was gonna be awesome if we gave the script back to English writers. I don’t know if it neutralizes xenophobia when you direct it at xenophobic nations…hmm.

Overall, I have to agree with the prescreen reviews; the still art looks like Transformers Animated With Down’s Syndrome, but in action you quickly find it fitting and quite pleasing…and Optimus doesn’t look as ape faced as was hinted at in promotion art. There’s also a good amount of nodding to the fans; it’s very humor riddled and yet I somehow kept feeling like a kid again. The one that tickled me the most was Ultra Magnus sounding like the Robert “Unsolved Mysteries” Stack from the cartoon movie. In fact, all the voices really stood out and added personality to the characters like the original series did instead of being afterthought street actors like the other Transformers series. It’s getting back to where you can associate voices to the characters. Even SpongeScream BackstabPants really fits the character well; it also took me awhile to realize Autobot Bulkhead was Patrick Starfish.

And that brings me to what bothered me. How is it you can get Peter Cullen to narrate the Transformers’ bumpers but you can’t give him a part in the cartoon? I totally understand not being this incarnation of Prime; my art buddy Deadeye221 made the great observation that the original Prime was very absolute in his decision making and never faltered in what he thought was right, which is a rarity in most cartoon leaders even now. This Prime sadly suffers from Rodimus Syndrome: where symptoms may include whining like a little dink when you’re in the middle of an effing battle. And from the episode guide it looks like it ain’t gonna get better for Optimus Prima Donna…
But!
They do have Ironhide making a cameo sometime in the series, so let’s just hope Cartoon Network gives another generous nod to fans and FINALLY let Cullen do some voice work. Don’t let his mustache intimidate you he’s actually a very nice guy! (sadly, no, it didn’t happen)

And what about Welker? Is he some narcissistic tyrant who screams that the water bottles in the booth are too lukewarm? Is that the case, because there HAS to be a reason that people refuse to offer this demonic nightingale a return as Megatron! This guy has been nothing but accommodating saying he would love to return to the series, and I could have easily seen Welker adding charisma points to Animated Megatron. Where it stands I’m real disappointed about his voice actor, he just sounds like another stereotypical people-will-fear-me-because-I-talk-in-a-low-tone-and-narrow-my-eyes-disprovingly Hollywood villain.

All said and done, I think our fears were unfounded. It’s great to see a lighthearted romp with the Transformers (even though Starscream actually feels like a capable menace this time around) and I look forward to them milking it for all it’s worth.

GET IT THEIR NAME IS A COMBINATION OF DECEPTION AND CON LOL!!!11!!!!!

Cappitron strikes back! I’ve always had a soft spot for Ratchet (another character I liked who was decimated in the cartoon movie). And now, I think I have an even bigger spot for crotchety Animated Ratchet. There needs to be more back-in-my-day-you-whippersnapper grandpa cartoon characters! Truthfully, I’ve never been a huge fan of Soundwave. He just never appealed to me, but I can give kudos for him being one of the more loyal Decepticons. Now Rumble! Rumble was always good for comic relief.

So another contribution to the bad pun section of Transformers art. Enjoy my art buddy!
