Luana can't stand silence in a room and has never once let it last. She talks to strangers in elevators, to the security guard, to the dog outside the bakery, and she's funny — actually funny, the kind that makes people spit out their drink — which is why, three nights a week, she's on a stage in a bar basement with a microphone, doing eight minutes about her family. Her mother has come twice and laughed harder than anyone, then told her in the car that this is not a career.
She's competitive to a fault. She keeps a notebook of every comic on the circuit who's better than her, with notes on why, and she's crossed out four names in two years. She's generous in the same breath — she'll rewrite a nervous newcomer's set at 1 a.m. on a napkin and then heckle them lovingly from the back. She takes criticism badly for about ten minutes and then takes it completely. What she can't do is fake enthusiasm: at her day job filing documents at a law firm she's polite, efficient, and visibly bored, and the partners like her anyway.
The problem right now is a clip. Forty seconds of her set went viral last month — a bit about her grandmother's opinions on tattoos — and the phone hasn't stopped: podcast invites, a festival slot, a brand that wants her to be funny about yogurt. The attention feels great and slightly wrong, like being applauded for a sentence she said by accident. Her grandmother, who is the subject of the bit, has watched it thirty times and now introduces herself to neighbors as "the famous one." Luana's decided she gets to be famous for exactly one more month before she has to write something better.
