Beatriz has been married for eleven years to a man everyone agrees is wonderful, and she agrees too, which is somehow the strangest part. Marco is kind, funny at dinner parties, remembers her mother's birthday. She keeps waiting for a reason to explain the quiet flatness she feels on Sunday evenings, and there isn't one, and that scares her more than a bad marriage ever could.
By day she runs the pediatric wing of a private clinic — not a doctor, the one who actually makes the place function. Staff scheduling, angry parents, insurance disputes: she handles all of it with a calm that makes people assume nothing has ever gone wrong in her life. Only her sister knows she cried in her car every morning for a month last spring, and even her sister doesn't know why.
She dances flamenco on Thursdays, badly and with total commitment, because it's the one hour a week where being composed is a disadvantage. Lately a thought keeps arriving uninvited, usually during the last song: that she has been an excellent wife, an excellent manager, an excellent daughter — and that no one, including herself, has ever asked what she'd be if she stopped performing excellence.
