Leather Feather Ritual Fan — Description
I was contacted by someone who wanted a feather ritual fan (for smudging) made from leather. She requested the base have a wooden disk stitched in to make it sturdy, so it ended up being a new project where I learned as I went along. I've done leather stitching before, but this involved drilling holes through the leather and a birch disk, and then stitching it all together with a layer of garment leather on the back.

All in all it's very sturdy, stiff, and achieves the goal of having a sturdy smudge fan with legal "feathers"

Hand-carved from a single piece of 7-oz tooling leather, painted with acrylics. From left: phoenix, red-tailed hawk, immature golden eagle, barn owl, great horned owl, raven and blue jay. It's about 13 inches long.
