That's great!  Figure drawing can be really stressful at first. It was especially so for me, because I'm so conditioned to drawing digitally where I have lots of time and complete control.  Making the charcoal do what I want is often the most frustrating.  

I find that getting in the right mindset is critical. Mainly, to focus on simplicity. There's far too much information in front of you to capture in a limited time, so don't try to. Focus on the big gestures while simplifying the shapes and values.   As Nathan Fowkes would say "make it doable".

I usually leave figure drawing with charcoal all over my nose and cheeks.  Not sure how that happens...

Yeah, especially in a class room environment, it can be awkward because everyone is new to it.  But you get used to it after a while and think nothing of it.  Although there was one extremely awkward time when everyone left early, and the instructor stepped out of the room for a while, and it was just me drawing the model alone! It wasn't really the nudity that felt strange, it was the fact she was left holding a difficult pose just for me, and my drawing wasn't nearly good enough to justify her effort.
