This is a redo of an old drawing I drew back in 2008 xD : black-yoshi.deviantart.com/art…Omg I'm kind of laughing at this line in description on it "There expressions were just randomly thought of by me" xD -idk why that's amusing me to be honest."
Idk I guess I realized the background looked rather un-inspiring. xD (I remeber not liking the idea of adding a chessboard to it to begin with. xD)
Idk randomly re-ran into this drawing and felt I should try updating it, and here it is! xD
I feel like I should've done more with the background, but my PC could not handle this drawing, and didn't feel like experimenting more than I had to. (Made the canvus too big and didn't want to resize it. xD
Can probably make like a background version if anyone's interested in that. xD

Idk if this would help you with colors. (I don't want to give out bad advice and all xD)
But with your drawings it looks like you're using the same color to shade with, but it's just in a darker hue. That usually makes a drawing not look as dimensional as it could?
What I learned was, that you more or less need a different color to do your shadows with.
So with like darker skin colors, I'd say when making the shaded parts, you might want to use a more red/purple color.
Here I did it with one of yours, I used a dark purple, and adjusted the opacity of it.~:
