Layers are one of the basic building blocks of making digital art with Photoshop and many other programs. If you don't know how to use them or what they do I'd highly recommend looking at a more basic tutorial before using mine.

Sorry to bring this thing up again, but I have a question. How long did it take you to create that picture using that method? So far it's taking me quite a while just to trace the lineart. Doesn't help that I'm having trouble keeping a steady hand; I frequently wind up going off the line, and the only method I can see to prevent that is to zoom in and combine-select various portions of the art. Which takes a while. So far I think I'm better off just using the fill option by itself. I dunno, maybe I'm just impatient.
I'm definately growing a real appreciation for digital artists.

To color a full picture it usually takes me between 5-8 hours. It may help you to use a tablet because once you get used to it, it's like using a pencil. But yeah, digital art is much tougher then some people think it is.

Also very useful. I need to get photoshop very badly! It seems much easier than coloring by hand!

I love Photoshop because you can get smooth, rich color that you can never get with traditional mediums. Now don't be fooled, digital coloring can be just as tricky and time consuming as coloring by hand... it just takes practice.
As for having a MS paint tutorial.... Erf... no. I don't think I've even touched that program in 10 years.

Ah... forgot to mention. Look for a program named "Gimp". From what I hear it's a lot like Photoshop... and the best thing is that it's free! I've never used it, personally but I know several people who do.

Ah, nice. I use "The Gimp" myself (it's free), but it has the same basic features, like dodge and burn. And while I've figured out the advantage of the two features, so far I haven't gotten furthur than basic away-from-the-light shading using a blurring feature to not make the shadow so super-sudden. This does prove helpful, though.
I hadn't thought of placing coloring in separate layers, though. I've just been using the fill option, hoping that it doesn't leave too many white speckles around the outline. And now I know what use the "Multiply" option is. So yes, this tutorial is very helpful.
