Type 16 Assault Rifle — Description
After the Vietnam War, many of America's allies adopted the M16 assault rifle and many of the nations that adopted it made localized variations. The Type 16 was introduced in 1977 for the South Japanese Army. The Type 16 was meant to replace the Type 55 battle rifle. Using the NATO standard, 5.56x45mm NATO round, the Type 16 replaced all of South Japan's weapons chambered for the 7.7x35mm Arisaka. While South Japan has never fielded the Type 16 in battle, several mujaheddin factions in Afghanistan were given Type 16's to fight the Soviets (1979-1989). Many Type 16's were also sold to Iraq during the Iraq-Syrian War (1980-1989). The reports from the battlefields have been used to improve the Type 16.
