Description Adopted in 1963 for the US Army, the M16 first saw service in the jungles of Vietnam. The M16 first faced off against Viet Cong guerrillas during the Vietnam War in the 60's. While reports showed the M16 was a suitable weapon to replace the M14. The M16 faced problems when the military didn't issue cleaning kits. The M16 faced off against the Soviet's AK-46 and AK-47. After the Vietnam War, the M16 was redesigned. The M16 uses the 5.56x45mm NATO round. Since the end of the Vietnam War, the M16 and its variants have been adopted by American allies. The M16 also saw limited use with the Iraqi Army during the Iraq-Syrian War (1980-1989) and with the various mujaheddin groups of Afghanistan during the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989).
