I don't know how I missed this on a previous run-through, but I'm glad I found it this time. There's something terribly inhuman about this (a shocking contrast to your usual vibrancy); only the tiny speck of still-red blood indicates something other than a lifeless corpse.
I'm thirsty now.

LOL - he was completely covered in salt from having been in the water for several hours. Once that stuff is crusted on it doesn't come off easily. Urethral openings get hit hard with the salt but eventually it just seals off the mucosal exposures and numbs them. Getting down and rolling around on this very sharp dry salt is for the truly insane and James was just insane enough to do it. Hell, I'm not going to stop anyone if they want to submit their flesh to that - I'll just keep shooting. BTW, there is no manipulation here - his body really did look exactly like that. He's the only one of my models who's been able or willing to do this; it's a masochist's wet dream for sure.

Thank you. It is so salty up there on the north end of the Great Salt Lake that the model's body quickly becomes covered in a layer of it. Most often I just leave it where it is and allow it to become a part of what we're doing. In this case it worked out well.

I have to ask, doesn't the salt "burn" the model?

The salt can burn, definitely. But usually only if it gets into the eyes or other openings of the body; especially below the waist. The problem with this setting is that once the lake waters recede, which they often do during years of drought, the salt left behind forms hard, sharp crystals which easily cut the feet. And of course the salt in the cuts can be very painful. Both the models and I have to be very careful with that and so we wear flip flops, which the models kick off before I photograph them. I usually wear just a sarong when shooting out there because the salt in the water quickly saturates my clothing and makes it extremely uncomfortable. Another reality is that virtually all of my models, male and female, trim or shave all of their genital and backside hair. Many shave or wax all of their body hair. This leaves the skin vulnerable for the first day or two and the salt in contact with that delicate skin can be crazy painful. I encourage my models to do their shaving a couple of days in advance of the shoot so that the skin isn't so raw. I know from experience that the saltiness of the Great Salt Lake waters can be ouch ouch ouch when in contact with freshly shaved genitals.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I figured that was the case since I once did a sensory deprivation tank with lots of epsom salts in it and it BURNED certain areas terrible. Your models are very brave...LOL. I look forward to more great photos from you. CHEERS!

Thanks Marco. James was fearless and open and free out there and seemed mostly oblivious to the rigors of rolling around in the salt like that. He gave me a lot to work with, mostly by dint of his willingness to just let go and play and have fun. Finding the right people to work with is a huge part of what I do.
