GIMP 2.I rarely draw hybrids, and this foxboy has been sitting in my WIP folder since February. Started drawing to pass time while attending a fighting game tournament that did not turn out quite as planned - and I was not among the contestants - and there, he almost remained.
Today seemed a good occasion to make him presentable. In recognition of a mutual appreciation for beautiful boys.

It is going to be a couple of days at least, but it's coming. Going through my WIP folder for the holidays - fantasy/historical anthros won the polls, with robots next up, and deep space after that. With a little mixing and matching on the way.

My favorite part is the little pattern you add to the wings, it creates this very realistic texture

While painting this I was having trouble sleeping, so often went up in the middle of the night and did manual work to pass time. The powder of the wings is painted one grain at a time, outlined and shaded individually. A very slow process and not one I recommend in the long run - especially not as it is part the result of illness o.O - but the result came out well.

I don't use emojis, and that is just as well, because there is none to convey my self-satisfied well fed cat-like grin right now. That is exactly what I was going for. Everything about this piece is intended to be completely unadulterated eye candy, so referenced the wings completely with focus on them being striking and even flamboyant with only passing concern for feasibility. I considered including a tiara with golden Gundam-ish butterfly antennae and a "bracelet" on the tail root as well, but ran out of space and time.
Well, almost everything. Obviously there is the symbolism of metamorphosis involved as well. But that is about it.

Really pretty and super befitting BJ both in the character design and her knack for the bright and colourful (dare I say flamboyant?)! It's a great homage! To zoom in is to be dazzled by the details of the wings and practically feel the warmth of its colours!
Also it was really cute seeing the little exchange the two of you had over it. ^^

Sometimes begin with just a sentence without context as the concept behind a picture; for him it was "Some boys just want to be pretty butterflies". When I brought him out of the WIP folder in December, it seemed like just the right timing - not just for the overall style and subject, but also the themes involved.
Meeting an artist who is not only on a significantly higher technical level, but who also has a very different approach than one's own, is a metamorphosing experience. It teaches the promise that though we are all moreoften than we like to think blind in our own ways, little by little and with help, we may yet learn to see.
