Description My third version of the Avante class starship, an early TNG era light cruiser.

The Avante class was a parallel development to the successful Springfield class, years before anybody thought to scale up the geometry and create the behemoth Galaxy class. The Avante was a typical First Fleet design, with low-slung nacelles and a compact form, a true successor of the legendary Pallada class. The frigate-sized Avente was designed with weapons befitting much larger starships, earning her the classification of light cruiser, and the unofficial one of "pocket battleship".

The class saw action against the newly returning Kzinti, but a vessel of the class became a legend of her own. The USS Polaris NCC-68782 was ominous for being able to communicate with her Captain, Uriah Noah, on a level only the two of them could understand. The ship was one of the many to sacrifice herself in the Borg Supercube event, enabling its destruction and preventing the victory of Mankind'd Bane.

I re-designed the ship to look more like the standard small TNG-era ships. I built the marker nacelles so that the viewer's thoughts won't be that the ship is actually a mis-shapen Galaxy class starship. The model is almost entirely new, I salvaged parts of the saucer only. And I finally learnt how to build a TNG Phaser array...

A good design, appropriately aggressive for a warship.

She's a worthy successor of the Polaris lineage.

I came up with a Bridge module floorplan for the TNG version of the Polaris as a replacement if the current bridge becomes irreparably damaged or obselete. if you want to see it just say the word and I'll post it.

Interesting and a great model and render, however I was never a fan of the Cheyenne marker nacelles. Have you thought of perhaps something resembling Ambassador nacelles for this design? To kind of show that while it's using new tech it's still also using tried and tested technology as well.

Nobody realls knows, given that nobody but Noah and Leah Decker heard the Polaris speak to them. It is said that the ship knew her mission is doomed and decided to contact her Captain.

Look up Orbiter Souls on DevArt, that's where I got the concept (with permission)

No, it was the Polaris' "soul". She knew she will die in the mission and she felt obliged to warn Noah.

I think it's missing a little something for the saucer. Maybe a pair of those New Orleans-class impulse engines on the saucer would even things out.
I know I'm a critc, it's just this version feels a little off-balance to me compared to the second avante Polaris ya made under your previous alias.

I wanted to keep her lines clean. Adding extra parts would make it look too cluttered.

For the phasers what method did you use? The simplest I've found is to simply loft a bezier and fit endcaps.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

thefirstfleet In reply to karanua [2011-10-03 20:38:49 +0000 UTC]

I made a torus of 12 sides and 200 segments. I selected the top polies, extruded them, scaled them down to be flat. On all the edges running around (except for the ones on the raised part), I used an Extrude modifier. I deleted the back part where there is a gap, you know, the broken circle style and Capped the holes. I used the Cut tool to draw a vertical line just in the middle of the capped parts, selected the polies on their left or right, it doesn't matter, and used the Hinge from Edge tool, with the hinge being the aforementioned cut line, with a setting of 30 segments.

karanua In reply to thefirstfleet [2011-10-03 20:42:59 +0000 UTC]

That seems a long way around, simpler I think to loft a spline and then deform the resulting mesh.

Nahh, with the Ring and Loop tools, the whole process is about five minutes per strip.

Actually, building the phaser strips is relatively easy. I figured it out myself, after looking at some reference photos.

It's a re-design of a re-design, the Polaris of the TMP era. And, with every decent ship named Polaris, she has low-slung nacelles
