Man, you really weren't afraid to go to some deep, personal levels for this story, were you? I'm glad you didn't do a car crash for Taylor's death, since those are used a little too often in fiction. Plus, having it be ALS (wow, another tribute to Dogbomb1... I never knew him, but he must have meant a lot to you if you wanted to include him in your story like this ), combined with the fact his dad died ten years ago, obviously when Nes was still a kid, would have made the experience all the more traumatic. I mean, there was that one photo of Taylor with Nes, who looks so proud of his big, tough, mighty, superhero-esque father... only for his dad to suddenly become helpless and unable to walk (and before his time, too). It must have been quite the blow.
It makes the decisions made by Nes' mom and the coach more understandable... but really, those choices, while good-intentioned and loving, were also made out of fear. They were worried if Nes knew that his father lost matches, it would do even more damage to him. And sadly, like all tales where people try to avoid what they fear with lies... it ends up coming true anyway. Nes wound up more damaged than before.Β
However, considering that you earlier more or less confirmed that this all takes place before Nes meets Ryan, it looks like there's going to be hope for Nes after all this. But it also looks like he's going to have to go through a lot of work and effort to achieve any kind of happy ending... and closure.

I actually didn't know him very well, but I was inspired by his journey and followed it for around 9-12 months before he eventually died. That's why I wanted to put him in my comic - I thought he deserved it.

We knew a friend at our old church who slowly deteriorated under that evil disease.

Yeah, it's awful. I donate occasionally to the ALS Assocation. Sent them $5 recently. If they can even find a treatment that slows the disease down, that would be helpful for so many people and their families.

Yeah... I'm at least fortunate they have medication to slow down MS - at least for guys like me with a remittent case. I wonder if that's along the same kind of lines as MND... a neurological/immunity glitch?

Well... you did a rather decent job of choosing the cause of Death; ALS is not something anyone should have to suffer, and that goes for any disease.
I remember my Grandfather had Parkinson's disease... it was awful, seeing him confined to a hospital bed during his final years, so thin, unable to walk... it was back in early 2016 we finally pulled the plug on him, and allowed him to pass on.Β
That is a meaningless comparison I made, but my point is, it is better to remember the good aspects of a loved one, rather than the bad. In fact, during the time in which we attended the funeral, my brother was given a picture of our grandfather as he looked in life (So he could purge from his mind the sight of grampa's face in death (Jewish funeral customs differ from what we normally see in a funeral), but I digress.
Long story short, I can compare my brother's feelings that time to how Nes felt when he saw his father in that state as much as I want, but I doubt I will ever understand... Nonetheless, I am sorry...

I'm really sorry to hear about your grandpa. My grandmother on my Dad's side was kind of similar. She had Alzheimer's and barely held on for years before finally going. It's no way to live.
That photo was a good idea. And honestly, that's why my side of the family doesn't like to do open caskets. Why would your last sight/memory of someone to be their dead body? At least that's the feeling we share. Not everyone agrees, and that's okay. It can help some get closure.
But, in any case, I'm glad that how I made Nes feel is recognizable and understandable to some people. I wanted it to be obvious that Nes had lasting trauma from seeing his strong, "perfect" father figure waste away from a horrible diease.

Thank you! I decided on the name a while back before Taylor died, but I knew she was getting old and it would be a matter of time. I honestly expected to finish the story before that happened. I didn't think she'd die right after Act One, when I introduced Taylor Irwin.
