I will definitely look into that!
Usually I don't just finish here. I use curves, levels, and other things to adjust the wolf into the background better.
But I will look for something like the shadows/highlights thing and try that out. I'm still learning!

At least you tried! I tried photoshop maybe 2 years after GIMP and had the same reaction as you. They're just so different from one another. xD Perhaps one day. Photoshop has a lot of things GIMP doesn't, so I'd love to really work with it.

Don't forget to be careful where you lighten the wolf.
Also, black fur has a slight bluish purplish tint to it. It isn't completely black and dark. I suggest using a few pictures of black wolves for reference.
But of course, this is just a rough outline of what you do in your manipulations.

Well, for instance, if someone requests or commissions me to do a black wolf in a certain pose. There aren't many black wolf stock photos out there, so this would be the next best thing.
