Description Last night, I broke down and freaked out about having my Nehelenia outfit done in a week or so... I promised not to procrastinate, but alas, it seems that has indeed occurred.

Instead of paying a fortune for beads for the necklace, bracelet, etc, I decided to try something new - using polymer clay (Fimo, Sculpy, etc) in a quickly made silicon mold. I was originally going to cast these out of resin, but was too lazy to pull all of that stuff out, and risk getting the "casting pox" rash from it. Plus, the resin would take at least 15 minutes before I could demold it and cast again, and I just did not want to spend that much time (I think I wound up with 100 of these in the end).

You can find info about the "Amazing Mold Putty" here, as well as order it, I think...

I apologize for the picture quality - they're from my cell phone, but you should be able to follow what I was doing pretty decently with them. It's easy, either way, so no worries.

I forgot to mention in the tutorial that these, as with all bits out of polymer clay, can just be painted with generic acrylic paints (these were~)

I'll post pictures of the finished jewelry and cosplay when it's all done, but for now, you can use your imagination :3

As per the usual, do not copy, steal, edit, redistribute or do other malicious things with or to this tutorial.
If you claim it as your own, I shall find out and you'll have to watch your back...

Oh, I believe it. Its kind of expensive here, too, but not too bad. I never tried using Model Magic - I think I may give that a shot sometime soon! Thank you for the tip!!

Much easier than my method: I made molds from polymer clay. It actually worked quite well for making little jewels from hot glue.

did you bake the clay in the mold?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to NaughtyBirdBoutique [2011-04-17 21:07:22 +0000 UTC]

Nope, just popped it out as it was, laid it out and cooked it then (sorry if it was unclear in the tutorial...)

No worries, I was just curious :]
I'm actually trying some molds out of polymer clay because I don't have the mold stuff, so I'm experimenting!

Thanks for replying :]

No problem :3

I just checked the package, and it does say that if you want, you can cook in any molds you make with them, up to 350*F or so, so I actually think that you could indeed bake clay in the molds It might be worth checking out if you ever want to...

I've never tried making molds out of clay before, but that might not be a bad idea. I do know that the craft store by us has something like "easy mold" or something for polymer clay, which I think is just a squishier poly clay, might be worth checking out too!

Wonderful Tutorial!! I have some big round beeds for a character I want to make, but can't find them in a see through red color...so I was thinking of making aresin mold. Now I'm wondering if this sort of thing would work better.
I read through it all, but I have a quick question: So if you wanted to do a whole bead (like not flat on one side), you just make two molds and...which parts glue together? The Molds or the final beads?

Sorry for the trouble!

Oh, you definitely could! It's not hard at all, and a fun way to make buttons or jewelry without the tediousness of making each and every one one at a time :3

There are so many different ways of doing it, but usually, I fail at them - this is by far the easiest way I've found!!

Very handy resource. I may see if I can get some ordered by semester end (pottery class). I'm always a bit nervous about what might happen if what I stick in isn't clay. If not I just start shoving objects into clay and see what happens.

taeliac In reply to Izixa [2011-04-07 17:39:00 +0000 UTC]

Well, the bonus of silicon is usually the only thing that sticks to it is silicon, so just about anything else would make the molds non-stick :3 If you're really worried (like, a very sticky material - a friend tried it with hot glue in the mold and it was messy!) you can coat the inside of the mold in mold release to help get the cast out later :3

Izixa In reply to taeliac [2011-04-08 01:04:29 +0000 UTC]

I imagine hot glue was messy! It's well.. hot and melty..
But these would be helpful to make molds of some shells I bought.

SeductiveByatch [2011-04-06 20:40:15 +0000 UTC]

So did you put 2 molds together to get the full round shape or did you glue them together or just roll the fimo around in one mold with a toothpick in it to get the hole in them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

taeliac In reply to SeductiveByatch [2011-04-06 21:57:45 +0000 UTC]

I'm actually going to just be using these flat, and gluing an eyepin (I think that's what they're called... they're shaped with one loop on one end, a rod part of the wire, and then you make another loop on the other end...) to the back of them.

If you wanted them 3D, you can make two molds, or just glue them back to back. Since it's soft enough clay, I'd think you could make two of them, push them together with a toothpick in the middle (what I originally tried to do and then I said screw it )

Well, something is getting done ^^ I'm doubting I'm going to have a wig, tho, unless I just butcher my Yuuko one, as I still haven't ordered my wefting yet

And, sorry I missed your call the other day! We were at the doctors, I forgot I had an appointment, and it was rather long (just normal shrink-doctor, nothing major)
