Edit 01/25/12:Maybe I should clarify that I don't hate Riku. I just wish he'd make smarter decisions.
I searched all over DA and after seeing about 7 "I
Riku" stamps, 10 "Riku is Sexy" stamps, and other Riku supporter stamps, I realized that there aren't any "Anti-Riku" stamps! 
Sorry to all the Riku fans out there, but I didn't make this stamp for you.

I could write a three page essay about why I question Riku's intelligence, but I'll just give you the quick run through I gave my friends.
Riku: I'm not afraid of the darkness!
[An adventure of being consumed by darkness later.]
Riku: I can't control the darkness in my heart! What do I do???
Mickey Mouse: Embrace it! That's the only way to defeat it!
Riku: That makes perfect sense!
I have a problem with the relativism of the entire Riku side of the Kingdom Hearts story.

Riku has done some really horrible things in the first game that definitely warrant as an idiotic character. Either that or over-emotional/possessive.
I personally love Riku, but nothing ticks me off more than when people try to say that Riku is a perfect character. I just got off of another argument that suggested that Kairi is considered disrespectful towards Riku. Specifically the part where she says, "Let's leave without Riku" and "Riku can take care of himself". Obviously the first quote she said because she could probably sense his stupid actions that he was going to commit, and the second because she believed in Riku's ability. Rather than pinpoint Kairi as the horrible character, let's take a look at what Riku did:
1. He embraces the darkness and tries to provoke Sora into joining him
2. He kidnaps Kairi and tries to keep her away from Sora, putting her and Sora into harms way
3. He listens to Maleficent, someone he barely knows, and puts her trust over his OWN BEST FRIENDS
4. He attempts to kill Sora many times, with and without Ansem's influence
5. He endangers Kairi and the other princesses
And that's just in the first game
The next games involve him abusing and mistreating Xion, ignoring Roxas's feelings, and trying so desperately to avoid Sora in KH2. Seriously, if he was such a good friend, why didn't he let Sora know he was ok? Instead he leads him on this wild goose chase because he is sitting in shame from what he did. The only way he was able to confront Sora was through Kairi! Kairi had to convince him to stay, and even then he looked reluctant. Stop being so depressed, fix what you did not cry about it.
Dream Drop Distance helped his character out a lot though, but not by much.

It's strange that he can be overly emotional, but still has such a steady and even voice.
He really doesn't seem to base his decisions on anything logical, just what feels easiest to him at that exact moment. And he ends up feeling so bad about his decisions that he makes even more bad decisions! Oh Riku! Why?!
I'd heard that DDD did give him a bit of redemption so at least that's a step in the right direction for him.

I finished playing the game last month and it's refreshing seeing Riku have a different outlook on life. He still has some irritating decisions, like he is less caring about certain situations or just acts on a whim. He even at one point insults Sora's intelligence, even though Sora figures out the whole thing by himself before Riku even realized what's going on.
But he does grow up and gets a special surprise by the end.

Although I love Riku by now, I read your whole description and realized that I agree with it entirely. XD I think he was fine when he was a kid, and he's great now, but age 15 must have been his Stupid Phase or something. *sweatdrop* (Mine was age 13, so I don't blame him. Although my own Stupid Phase didn't result in my best friend having to save the multiverse from me. o.O)

Ha, ha! I agree with your reasoning as well. I thought Riku was great when I first met him and then he disappointed me so badly later on in the story. But he is young and I'd hope he'd learn from his (literally) Earth-shattering mistakes.

I agree, he does have great potential under the annoying xD I think there is alot more to Riku than we get to see. He has the ability to be a very compelling character, however he always manages to ruin it with his stupidity

To me, Riku was pretty stupid up until he accepted the darkness (which yeah, that is confusing, accepting the established...badness of the series). But I think some of his actions in KH2 justify his stupidity just a bit and something that Sora mentions about darkness and light needing to exist -kind of- explains why no one necessarily condemned Riku for accepting the darkness, because it was what best suited -his- power and mind. That's just what I think though.

Kingdom Hearts does set up the Darkness as bad, but not inherently. So there shouldn't be any problem with Riku using it and accepting it as a part of himself.
But even after he accepts the darkness, he's constantly caught in a battle of self loathing. If it was really the right thing to do, stop beating yourself up, Riku. No harm no fowl, right? But the poor kid just can't seem to accept that he accepted the darkness. These backwards and upside down thoughts really drove me batty for awhile.

mind you, id beat myself up abit too if i destroyed my entire world (only to have my best friend fix it)
i think he is all goods with accepting the darkness, but cant accept the bad things he did
