This fly looks really... extremely detailed! You did a wonderful job on that reflecting light, but also on the details of the wings, and all those structures and "textures" on that fly.
May I ask - how large is the original drawing?

Quite small ^^. But yet, for such a small animal, still large...

pencil brand: prismacolor   Check. Thanks it's great to know as I keep putting off getting new pencils. The shop has too wide a range with no one to ask what's best for what on what. -- Is it just metallic prismacolor it good for ?? as your range of colour is endless & seamless for the Fly, and your other work. Makes you keep looking after knowing pencils made that shimmering of colour.

Sunima In reply to straingedays [2015-05-01 08:28:37 +0000 UTC]

The pencils does not make the drawing shiny. You have to draw it until it looks shiny by skill.
they probalby sell metallic colors too though. In my package there is only silver and gold which is metallic colored. But ive used better metallic pencils than theese.

And no, prismacolors are not particulary good for metallic drawings. Thats just me who chose to try and draw shiny things. Prismacolors are just famous for being good at blending together.

straingedays In reply to Sunima [2015-05-02 04:47:13 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for all the advise, as my knowledge in colour pencils is badly lacking. In graphite the shine is made by building up layer by layer, and not in one heavy go. But you already know that.
After posting my comment I zoomed in your fly and saw Aquamarine, then some more research found the same pack you have with gold & silver. Metallic was perhaps the wrong word, but it's that luminous (shiny) quality ,,, as the good colours I had were Derwent's but never had them long enough to use them. -- Anyhow Thanks Again.

you have to build these colors up by layers too.
or, of course you don't have to, but it may be the best way for realistic drawings.

Oh, wow...I am quite amazed at your mastery of pencils. How can you obtain such an iridescent and...colorful MIX of colours ? Does it consist of only colouring tiny tiny delimited zones ? I have always wondered how we could "blend" colours with pencils...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sunima In reply to Aegis-L [2015-04-30 16:53:11 +0000 UTC]

blending is very good with the pencils i used here.
the brand is called prismacolor, but there are probably other good types out there too.
Try blending with a white or light pencil over darker colors, and it will look smoother.
also, you have to press them hard onto the paper for it to look smooth and colorful.
So you try to hide all the whites from the paper where it isnt suposed to be white.
