A bit of both. I'd been there many years before. I did know it was there but Pere Lachaise is so labyrynthine that it's very easy to get lost. We accidentally happened upon it when looking for Jim Morrison's grave.
They sell maps of the cemetery outside it, and stupidly (like the last time if I remember correctly) decided we wouldn't need one.
