Description Another submission to the #JoGees Star Wars/Disney challenge...

Look, Vanellope's driving her newly built pod racer...against other racers! Will Vanellope maintain the lead and win the race or will she end up burnin' out in the Donut Desert?

Thanks goes out to *shoze for providing some awesome feedback and tips!

hmmm, i dont know this character. cute image, though

the character is great and the composition is spot on but the background is hurting u a bit - the texture, the saturation and detailing are all treated the same even though it's supposed to be a vast desert. it makes your cute scene flat and unbelievable.

the are some pretty simple tricks to make something look far, even simple Gaussian blur to fake depth of field. its all quick and dirty "tricks" but it can level up any sketch. you should definitely try it.

Thanks! I'm considering scrapping the background all together and start fresh. I think I just rushed on it and wanted to get the background done.

I've used the Gaussian blur before, in Photoshop. It's unfortunate that Paint Tool Sai doesn't have a similar layer effect, instead, they provide a water brush tool that imitates the same effect but with brush strokes instead.

Definitely going to take your tips into consideration. Thanks, shoze!

i dont know SAI but you dont have to re-do the entire BG. sometime a bit of post work can go a long way. there are more ways to "fake" depth, for example stuff usually becomes brighter and less saturated as the get further away.

and if u wanna scrap the bg altogether u can try the "white-out" trick (its my own term, i have no idea how u actually call it), make the BG white and the with a soft white brush with a screen blending mode go over the character's edges. it makes it feel like its surrounded with bright light.

you can also try to do the fast lines look like in anime BG [link] makes things fast without actually drawing anything ^^

im all for smart art - making a powerful image without working too hard

hope u'll get a chance to try it out

Background finished, I guess. I went for your first tip; lighter and less saturation for far away objects. Now I think I'm finally finished.

Thanks again!

That,s funny, because I hear this: [link]

That's inseparable from podracing in my head, because when you're six/seven when Phantom Menace comes out, there's nothing cooler in the world than that race.
