Description Carbon ink w/brush'
Just keeping myself honest by showing what a mess I made of good drawings.  Smeared her face with a pass of my gloved hand, started reconstructing in ink, and really didn't get good line quality in general - oi. Now, then, if I were doing this for money, I'd just go in there and fix it.  Finished product wouldn't be as pretty as I'd like it to be, but it would be better than schlock - which is to say it'd be good enough.  So, yeah - I need the pressure of doing it professionally if it's going to get done. I mean done, done.

Not to make excuses, but, add to this that it's time to retire the old brushes and start using the new ones - I bought new ones for good reason.  The one I'm using is just plain worn out.

I might point out that I'm using for the first time Yasutomo sumi ink without shellac, my hands-down favorite ink, so far.  Much richer than Speedball Super Black and has a good feel when brushing it on, which is hard to describe.  And that's using a synthetic hair brush.  I have a feeling it will work even better with natural hair. It doesn't seem to dry as fast as ink with shellac, though I can't be sure if that's true, or not, without doing a side-by-side comparison.  A little pricey, so may not go with it when this bottle is done.  Still have to test FW Acrylic black, which isn't cheap, either, so we'll see.
____________
In the corner at top I had a nice broken outline drawing that I closed up unintentionally when I inked it.  And below that are some tiny silhouettes.  According to Mike Hoffman, it's easier to draw come up with poses of full figures by starting at the size of a dime and developing them, than it is to do them at regular size - so I'm testing that to see if it works for me.  So far, I's say it does.

I like the girl's design. It's cute. I especially like the way her floppy boots and shorts break up the silhouette with their little details. One thing that bugs my eye though is that I feel like the sleeve on her left side should be warping around in the opposite direction.

Gee, thank you!  Yeah - the wrap of the leaves is in flux because the direction of the arms was not as carefully considered and decided as the legs.  The surface lines of the lower body are definite, while those of the arms are not.  That's really the secret of drawing clothes - their lines exaggerate the surface lines of the body to make the position in space read clearly (i.e. the belt exaggerates the waistline, the sleeves exaggerate the surface lines of the arms) .   Sometimes they're even used as cheats - which is what I should have/could have done here - and maybe did and didn't make it work!  Haha.  But you're absolutely right.  It doesn't bug me because I don't pay attention to it - and that's why it's off to begin with, because I didn't pay attention to it.  What I need are crits like this to train me to pay attention to things like this.  Seriously.  I appreciate it.  I was so happy doing the ink lines, I forgot the story they were supposed to tell.

Good eye.  But I've told you that already.  Please, keep it coming (unless I scream, STOP!) Good crits are too few and far between.  Heh-heh.

No prob. Glad I could help. Haha that's actually pretty relevant to me right now! I'm working on a drawing right now of a girl wearing a similar type of shorts, and was doing what you're describing but I couldn't really put the concept into words.

Likewise.
This is what some people don't seem to get about crits.  When they're given and taken in the right spirit, they open a dialogue that benefits everyone involved.

It's nice of you to say so.  I find this part frustrating.  It's salvageable, but my first instinct is to do it over.  The problem is at the conceptual level - I was fuzzy on a few things that I thought I'd figure out on the fly.  Now it would be easier to trace it up if I'm going to pursue it.

I don't use finish pencils the way some do.  I don't lay down the pencil lines to look exactly like the ink lines and then trace them in ink.  That would waste time and numb my brain.  For decorative outline style I just do enough in pencil to establish a sense of the forms, then I finish with ink.  The two steps involve completely different ways of drawing.  One way (penciling) is "round", fully dimensional, the other (inking) is "flat", just about line qualities.  One problem I have is that I don't always switch gears cleanly from one to the other.  I start backtracking, which is how I ended up reconstructing parts of this when I should have been finishing.

This exercise was to fix that by really studying the forms and breaking them into shapes - which I did in part.  What I didn't do enough of was actually manicure the lines.  I should have finished this with broken outlines designing each line segment so it fit a specific purpose in directing flow and reciprocated with its neighbors just so in order to do it. . . There's more to it than what one might think.  Drawing is all mental.

Oh.  Well.

Honestly, you make a good point.  You got me.  I'm convinced.
I often see the bad right away and slowly lighten up over time until I actually like what I've done.
Acrylic white and a second pass with the brush for this one should bring it up to "good enough."

Thanks

BTW- Now you know what I was getting at in a previous comment when I said 'just because one knows what to do and does it, doesn't mean he does it well.' This is a good example of that.

As good a way as any to sum it up.
