“Step into the van for your lethal injection!”Red words sprawled
Across battered, crumpled pages curling like apple skins
A blue van,
A smiling nurse holding a long hypodermic needle
“Painless and Quick! Sterile Environment!”
I pause
Ponder the possibilities
Of such instant death.
Who would go There?
Mothers in desperation, children, old, weary bodies?
Death in one quick poke.
Or adventure seekers:
This world is not enough for them.
Perhaps they pause, hold their breath
Before the metal slips in, the loving sting of a bee
Perhaps they look up at the dim lamp
And wonder what makes the sun explode so.
And the nurse in the picture,
She is an angel
or so she thinks.
There is no profession more admirable.
Giving people
Death with Dignity
in the back of a dingy van.
It is all so Painless and Quick
to step into the van for your lethal injection.

I can sort of actually see this becoming sort of a portrait for the world a hundred years from now, where euthanasia becomes almost recreational - a happy skip into your final adventure! (no, I don't actually think that's a good idea, THANK you

Actually, that's kind of what I was thinking about when I wrote it... Sometime in the not so distance future, when humanity a) is battered enough that it really doesn't care anymore and so is willing to let people die whenever they feel like it or b) let the death with dignity movement grow massive and swell until the societal concept of death became very different than it is now.

Oh, no, I mean the idea of fictionally creating that world is a VERY good idea - just not the idea of the world actually BECOMING like that.
