Description
Life should be easy. She was Lady Serenity van Heather, firstborn daughter and current heir of the van Heather dynasty. She would inherit the family business, the houses and gardens, money would never be an issue. Her cousins and other relatives would listen to her and the regular folk would look up to her. And yet, every minute of the day seemed hard. From the walking lessons, the forced growth and the expected radiance to the rules, restrictions and high expectations in every second of her life, she had always to be perfect. And while she was proud of her name and her elegance, when she looked at the regular, poor and almost primitive citizens of Wynsiph, they seemed to be happier than she felt. Laughing children running around, playing with each other. Lovers openly showing affection, mothers hugging their children, people talking to each other without a care for etiquette. Of course, that behavior was leagues underneath her. But though while she didn't like the reckless roughness, dirt and mud, she felt a yearning for the freedom they all seemed to have. A peasant life for sure, but no restrictions, no rules, no expectations... Just once, just one day to be free of all the thousand rules, just a taste of freedom... Just going one time through town without her caretaker looming over her in the name of her parents. Is that truly too much to wish for?The girl looked in the direction of the room where her mother and father were talking to her personal magic teacher. She herself was sitting on a ancient chair made out of expensive wood with a book about the four basic elements and their ties to the world in their private library and was supposed to study said book. What she did, for the last hour at least. Pages and pages filled with swirly ink and ornamental pictures had been all she has seen the whole time. But she came of age, her tail tip bloomed and she just felt it was the time for herself to bloom as well! Every flower needed some sunshine, right? Her eyes wandered to the door in the opposite direction. Just one taste. Maybe an hour, maybe the remaining afternoon. What felt so right could not possibly be wrong, could it? Her delicate fingers put a fancy bookmark between the pages, before she slowly closed it. Her parents were still talking. They wouldn't even notice she was gone. And she would make sure she would be back in time for the evening meal, that should be easy. She gently took a golden pocket watch from the desk and stood up with trained elegance even though her length was still new to her. Just a little walk through town. She slipped through the door without making a sound, breaking free for the first time in her life.
It was wonderful! The air was fresh, golden leaves danced with the wind and the happy chatter of the townsfolk filled the air. It was strange, though, that nobody took notice of her. Nogro greeted her, no gentlegro praised her beauty and none of the simple girls asked about how she cared for her feathers and hair. W...well, she could be so gracious and let that slip... to many gros gathering around her would it make more difficult to actually see everything. Also she could not afford word about this found its way to her parents ears. At least not so soon. A nagging feeling tried to surface, a tiny bit of guilt for breaking the rules. Oh, what would her parents say... But she could not think of that now. It was too late anyways and she should not be so scared when there was freedom to experience! Taking a deep breath she continued to explore this simple life.
It was getting late when she realized her mistake. She had never been in town on her own and after chasing so foolishly and mindlessly after the supposed happiness of the life without rules, she found herself lost. Her feet started to hurt, the sun started to set and she had no idea which road would lead her home. Somehow she had expected to just be home after a street or two as soon as she decided to turn back, but of course it did not work like this. She felt embarrassed for not thinking about this and just assuming everything would just happen to her wishes. Of course she had to take the right roads and of course it would take a while after she walked through the whole town. And now it was getting dark, everything looked different and strange, she should have been home now for a while! Oh, stupid Serenity! Was this path leading her closer to her home or even farther away? She should ask a passing person for the way, but... there were bad people too, were they not? She had forgotten about the dark sides of this peasant life until now. There were thieves and murderers. Or evil ones, who would gronap her! If they knew she was a van Heather, all alone and lost, they surely would try to get money from her family! And then there were spites! Ooooh, what had she been thinking! She cast another look on her pocket watch, the gold gleaming in the remaining light and the hands ticking as the time ran. Quickly she clapped her paws together in an attempt to hide the gold from greedy eyes. Not that there was anyone in sight right now. But that only fueled her fear. Around her was something that looked like a construction site, the skeleton of a house clawing into the sky, while other parts were just empty and muddy like graves without gravestones. Fearfully she looked around while her gait quickened.
Out of nowhere a dark shadow appeared, a tall silhouette just came into existence right in front of her when she turned her head to face what was in front of her. She bumped right into it and fell down on the earth, her backside and her hands hurting from the fall. Normally she would be appalled of the dirt now clinging to her skin, but the dark figure towering above her was the bigger cause to worry. It could be a gro, but there were barbed twin tails swishing behind it - the tails of a spite! And in its claws it held the biggest and heaviest hammer she had ever seen in her life. The eyes of the creature were gleaming with malice and hate as it lifted the hammer above its horned head and dashed into her direction.
"Nononono please!", she called out in panic and tried to get away, but this creature was faster.
She tried to call on her magic, to maybe create a wall of earth between her and her attacker like she read in her books, but it failed. The pocket watch kept ticking.
The hammer crashed down and a scream pierced the air.
