Have you considered switching from an airbrush style to a cut-and-gradient style (select an area then do a gradient fill at low opacity, repeatedly in layers)? I find it takes longer, bit I got cleaner results when I was using it....

You bean like select an area and fill it with black-dark gray?
for shiny areas in layers? then perhaps blur a bit to get the rounding effects?
