Disney mermaids are fun as hell to draw and I'll forever be that little 8 year old girl who wants to be Ariel when I grow up (but a slightly less naive and stupid version)... but dudes the ocean's a tough place. There's sharks and creepy things no one wants to think about and oil spills and shit... mermaids need to be a little more prepared.This one's mildly prepared. There's a sword. Right there. And some stuff in some pouches. Maybe magic. Who the hell knows. I don't even remember drawing this.
(BTW I know, red hair and green tail. But no, not supposed to be any version of Ariel whatsoever)

I hate The Little Mermaid (and always will) but at least even Ariel-freaks can admit it's gets a bit tiresome with the Disney concept of merfolk.

I'm not sure if a sword is the best choice for underwater combat. It sure looks cool, though, and she's probably a lot stronger than a human of the same size.

I think something like a spear, which you can thrust with, or a knife, which is small enough that the water doesn't resist it as much. I just imagine it being hard to drag a sword through the water with killing force.
Really, though, it's a small matter. Who'd argue with a mermaid with a cutlass? *I* wouldn't.

That's a really good point. It would definitely be hard to move in the water. I think bow and arrow would be pretty useless, too. It would only go so far...

I really like this. The concept is great...the fact you mentioned the oil spill made me lol. I like the muted colors too. Gives it a "imma kick yo butt" feel. dark and kinda gritty. I like it ^^

Ironically, Ariel is the reason I became so determined to do acting when I was a child... and very possibly why I still do it. My mother explained some lucky woman got to be paid to be a princess AND a mermaid... Who the fuck would want to do anything else for a living?
