-- First off I need to say that this is not my dragon! I drew this dragon while following a video I found on YouTube just to see if I could do it a while back. But anyways let me know what you think

Thanks for the compliment and advice! I never actually gave much thought about adding more shadow to it after I had already finished drawing and posting it which is a shame because it really would've been much better with different shades and shadows.

I do the same thing. I do a drawing that takes me sooo long to do that once I get a whole image look, I absolutely thing its perfect and wont touch it. It helps to show it around on a site like this and people give some suggestions like that. There is always next time. I have tackled some dragons myself, they are not easy!! I give you major credit for doing such a good job with this!

Thanks again! I actually saw your charcoal dragon in your gallery and thought it was incredible! I want to learn charcoal to but I think I'll start out with graphite first.

its pretty much the same. Charcoal will blend a lot more than graphite ever will. That makes it a bit more difficult to work with yet much easier to blend. you just need to be careful with it. Also, charcoal can go much darker than graphite too. Other than that its not so different. Graphite might get shiny if you press too hard. thats one thing that makes me stay away from it sometimes. ITs a great medium to start with though.

Thats the general rule I followed. I did pencil drawings for about 8 years before I really got into color now. Im a big fan of using color now. ITs hard to get it right at first but now that i got my feet wet, its fun stuff. But yeah its all about baby steps

I have always enjoyed drawing landscapes. I like how you dont have to copy a picture exactly. You can deviate from it and put your own touches into it to make it your own thing. you know? With portrait drawing, you have to follow each detail exact to get a good image. With landscapes, you can do whatever the hell you want. you can do a tropical beach scene with snow cap mountains in the back and it will still look awesome. You just have so much freedom with landscapes.

You are absolutely right! I was thinking about that the other day.. About what it means to be an artist. An artist is someone who can do whatever they want when it comes to the world and art. Shaping reality with a pencil or anything for an artist is something that just happens naturally.
