Description
The Mazda Cosmo, born in the mid-1960s, was the true origin of the creation of this legendary model. Not only because of its famous rotary engine, which helped him take victory in the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans with the 787B , but also the Japanese did not expect that their engine would become popular thanks to a model, which would remain alive until 2002. And that model is the RX-7.In its first generation, it was presented to the world in 1978 and launched on the market in '79, the Japanese saw the light in a decade marked by the oil crisis, in which sports cars equipped with enormous engines with high fuel consumption were at low times of popularity and another approach was needed. Thanks to the central front engine layout, the vehicle improved weight distribution and handling, reaching 570,000 units produced until its second generation arrived in 1985.
Its third and last generation was launched in 1991, and it is considered by the youngest and enthusiasts as the best of all the RX-7, for its easy handling and its ability to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. and a maximum speed of 256 km/h. Even its weight was completely light, weighing only 1200 kg, thanks to the aluminum used for the hood, the double wishbone suspension and the spare wheel jack. Along with about 237 HP from the 1.3-liter rotary engine with two rotors, and a 4 or 5-speed manual gearbox, and another 3 and 5. 4-speed automatic.
The model was extremely striking for any of the 90s, with much more rounded shapes than its predecessors, a long hood, extensions on the underbody and a striking spoiler. It reduced its length to 4280 mm, which combined with a height of only 1229 mm and a width of 1750 mm, achieving very athletic and low-profile proportions. Especially with those superficial curves, and the legendary retractable lights that rose every time you turned them on.
As the 90s passed, the Rx-7 went through a series of facelifts and special sales, such as the éfini RX-7 in 1996. In fact, there are different versions of this car with different rotary engines, and talking about them would take an awful lot.
But just that year, its marketing was stopped in most of Europe, due to emission standards, although Mazda continued to produce it for the Asian and United States markets. Where at the end of the decade, its engine was increased to 276 hp, where it was already very popular by JDM street groups. In Japan, exclusively and only a special version called Type R Barthurst, which came equipped with self-leveling shock absorbers, was sold in 2001.
In August 2002, the Spirit R was introduced as an anniversary model as the last in the series. After 25 years of delighting sports car fans around the world, the RX-7 was retired from store shelves, but still remembered as a legendary JDM sports car both on the streets or at competition events, as well as in the videogames.
As a curiosity, I participated in Motorsport, in several races around the world such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans between 1979 and 1991 with the aforementioned 787B. He also won the 1981 24 Hours of Spa, the 1979 24 Hours of Daytona and was champion in the GTU category of the IMSA GT Championship between 1980 and 1987. He also participated in the Australian Touring Car Championship between 1981 and 1984 and was champion in 1983; and the RX-7 is widely used in drifting.
This is without a doubt one of my favorite sports cars, only behind this one and this . I like this car a lot, for its great sound, the modifications they make to it, its participation in motorsport, its lights, the interior and handling. I used this car a lot in Gran Turismo 6, and it was a challenging car for me, since I had to modify, only the engine, to beat other cars. Especially because I was finally able to race in the Japanese Super GT , but in the GT300 category, with this car , and that I wanted to go through it on the track. And several RX-7s competed in the Japanese Super GT, with this team becoming champion in the GT300 category in 2006.
But I found out about this car thanks to NFS Underground, and it always entertained me to drive it at night. I hope you liked the story of this car, see you in the next publication.
