A lot of people asked for one so...why not?
Please excuse any grammar/spelling errors ;u; I did this late at night.
This is for environments, but tbh it can be applied to characters and objects too. It's a little harder with characters. I might do a tutorial on how I do them another time, but for now have this.Β

Question about step four---what is "transfer"?Β I haven't found that button yet.... What does it do?

It allows the brush to be more transparent when you press lightly, and more opaque when you press hard. Not sure what V of PS you have, but this is where it is for meΒ gyazo.com/598bb74dcfa853be5fc3β¦

I just tried it on SAI and while the tiny little nit picky parts are different, it can basically be applied to that program too, yes : )

I find blurring my eyes sometimes helps me see it. Good practice to do it is cloud watching. I know it sounds strange but it really helps you see shapes that arent there. Like looking for little shapes in clouds or stars, its really good practice for your eyes.

I've been trying to practice doing environmental works, but find my colours are pretty 'fake' when I try to do them cause its all done grayscale first and colour overlayed because I am unsure how to work with colour... this is such a neat little package of advice for people like me who want to not produce full detailed works yet, but get some of the basics down pat in composition and colour

Another good thing for working out colours is find a photo with a colour scheme you like, and make a palette from that. The colour picker is your friend! Eventually once you do it enough your eye knows what colours to go for without needing the reference.

Definitely give it a go. I wouldn't use it for a rendered piece because its still not as reliable as really thinking out your composition and colours, but its a great exercise in breaking the tendency to want to detail too soon.Β

Don't worry. I found it hard at first too. I know it's said all the time but honestly the only way to find it easier is practice. Keep at it and you can do awesome things!
