Finally got around to trying out Gnome Shell for the first time ever, and I love it!I think I'm going to permanently switch to GS soon.
I liked Unity quite a bit once I finally got used to it..
But Gnome Shell has got to be the best desktop environment I've experienced yet!
I'm sold! lol
Setup still needs some work..
But this is basically a temporary install for now anyway.
Just testing it out and getting used to it.
Running in Ubuntu 11.04. (gNatty)
I think in the future (near future) Gnome Shell is going to be THE desktop of all desktops.
Been waiting for an environment like this forever.
Shell theme is Gaia by Half-Left> [link]
Icons at the moment are Awoken, by Alecive [link]
(GTK/Metacity theme is "a new start", also by alecive., Mixed with "Hope" by 0rAX0 [link] )
WP is Abstract Gaia Cycle, by XeroTrinity [link]

Not particularly "difficult", I wouldn't say.
At least not to set it up and customize it how you want.
I mean, I suck at writing/editing scripts/code..
But I can handle making some changes here and there to my conkys.
Though I cannot write my own from scratch; this is for sure! lol
But editing the background image(s), and editing certain lines of script to suit my needs, I can usually handle.

well one of the reasons I switched to Linux was because I wanted to actually learn how computers work, instead of just "using" them.
(or having them, use me) 
Conky is just one tool that is helping me to understand it all a bit more. So I am happy and grateful for that.
True, it's not for everyone..
and I've still got a ton to learn..
but one doesnt need to know how to do any of this script stuff to simply use a Linux OS/Ubuntu.
My whole family is now on Ubuntu.. and most of them don't know the first thing about computers, other than to "click stuff". lol
I am in no real hurry for the masses to move to Linux.
It would be nice for the world to stop using the windows rubbish..
but all in it's own time. lol
Linux has evolved greatly though, and continues to.
Won;t be long before there is a GUI for absolutely everything.
(we're almost there now).

I understand, my friend. I would have used Linux a long time ago if it weren't for the incredible Blackbox for Windows possibilities. But perhaps you can use a Blackbox/Fluxbox/Openbox/Hackbox window manager on Linux, join and start submitting some screenshots or, better still, styles!
