Description Completely coincidental that's she's number eighty-eight on our list but completely intentional that her Japanese name is Hooter.

Robin in Smash
Robin harks from Pilotwings 64, a game I'm only somewhat familiar with but one that seems to have a bit of a cult status. I'm much more familiar with the original Pilotwings, a great SNES game from a series that kind of fell away after it got palmed off to the 'Mii franchise.'
Pilotwings was lucky enough to get recognition in Smash Wii U with a stage that manages to combine the old with the new and infuses it with some of great music from both. But there were actually characters in the series and I wanted to offer it a larger role in Smash. The first game had instructors who would guide you through the games levels (and it actually turns out this was military training of sorts) though they didn't seem hands-on enough to be eligible for a role here.
Pilotwings 64 took a more cartoony approach and allowed you to pick from six characters: Three weight classes with a male and female in each.

Lark, the light male character is probably classified at the de facto main character since he appears in the centre of some promotional artwork but as far as I can tell the game itself didn't hold any one character in higher regard from the others. My reasoning, therefore, was that we've already got a few lightweight boys in Smash but no heavyweight ladies which was why I chose Robin.
With flying devices such as the rocketbelt, parachute and 'jumble hoppers' there's probably enough to come up with a cool moveset too!

Robin in the Pilotwings series
So Pilotwings had a Mii themed game on the 3DS (which I hear is actually pretty good) and that's been it for the series so far. I wonder if it will ever come back? Nowadays it feels like any game that's made up of a number of smaller, self-contained games (Kirby Battle Royale is a good, modern example) gets criticised but 'just being a bunch of minigames' and not enough to warrant a full release. Not sure if that kind of mentality would carry over to a new Pilotwings but I'd love to see a new one taking more inspiration from the older games.

But even if we do get a new game in the series it seems incredibly unlikely they'll bring back any of the old characters. While the environments appeared in Smash already, none of the cast have showed up at all (except for a sticker of Big Al, one of the instructors from the first game as a sticker in Brawl, but even then just referred to as 'instructor.')

Who knows though, maybe they'll make some new characters to fill in the gap! Or maybe they'll stick with Miis. Or maybe they'll do 'Mario's Pilotwings'...?

Nice to see appreciation for an obscure character, and an obscure series. I like Robin, and the PW64 cast. I hear one of the PW64 characters does cameo in the 3DS "Pilotwings Resort" game.

I like your cartoony style here, it's very stylish.

Well well, I went and looked it up and you're right! There is a little cameo in Resort! Nice to know the connection is made to the old games.

And thanks very much!

Why she would be jugs of fun- I mean she'd be a hooters to play- I mean she'd be a great new addition.

In all seriousness though, I do like her design as well as the possibilities of her character play in the game. Nice job with this pic and keep up the nice work.

I don't recall seeing anything other than magazine adverts and I don't think any characters were featured more than others there. Are you talking about television adverts? I never saw any of those. Or maybe you mean US adverts, which I also would not have seen.

Point is, I wasn't aware any character was favoured over any other but if Robin was then I feel more vindicated in my decision!

I want any Nintendo game that features a character named Hooter, even if that's just her Japanese name.

Pilotwings 64 itself got absolutely nothing in Smash 4. No music, no trophies, no Crescent Island on that stage...

Thank you!!! I can't stand it either how people coined the term "minigame collection" and started using it in a derogatory manner. If you play many of those, you'll see just how deep they really are. (Nintendo Land and Kirby Battle Royale being good examples of such) I could have sworn they frequently got advertised as "X games in 1".

Which is a shame because Kirby Battle Royale and Nintendo Land are both a lot of fun!

People want games to be huge, long and have lots of content these days. I think I might have an idea why.
I think most current game players are the people who grew up with them and are now adults with disposable income. When we were kids we'd be lucky to get two games a year so we had to make them last and ended up replaying them over and over again.

Now we're older (and simply better, so can complete them faster) and can buy our own games which results in getting them more often so for us, modern games don't seem to last as long as they used to so we feel like we're being ripped off.
