Backstory:

The Sagittarum Shields Chapter were an Ultima Founding space marine chapter raised from chimeric geneseed. The chapter was formed specifically to aid the Adeptus Custodes in their mission to protect the Emperor of Mankind. They specifically fill in for one of the greatest weaknesses the Custodians had: ranged combat. Only the Sagittarum Guard within the latter’s ranks specialised themselves in it, meaning that close-quarters combat was most prevalent.

  After the demonic invasion of Terra as part of Abbadon the Despoiler’s 13th Black Crusade the Adeptus Custodes faced its biggest crisis since the days of the Horus Heresy and the permanent entombment of the Emperor on the Golden Throne. Many of the Custodians, who had been alive since the Horus Heresy, died during the battle, leaving the most elite within the Imperium to sorrow over the loss over so many great warriors. Many of those casualties were due to lack of ranged support, as each Custodian fights man-to-demon and, whilst perfectly capable of taking hundreds of demons with them before falling, they would have been even more effective had they been covered by bolter fire.

  It was then decided by Reboute Guillamen, one of the 20 sons of the Emperor and only surviving loyalist Primarch, to raise the Sagittarum Shields as an auxiliary to the Custodians, with them adopting the gold, silver and red displayed by the latter. Their chapter badge was an imperial eagle in a hollow circle, wings on each side, a pillar piercing the centre and thunder bolts facing downwards. Each company was identified by stripes, with standard marines having them on their red right kneepad, whilst the sergeants to captains had it on their white left kneepad. The shoulder pauldrons were red with a gold rim, the rest of the armour was mostly gold with a silver underbelly plate and blue eye and nose details on the chest aquila.

  The chapter was organised a little differently than the others, with the standard number being 6,000 as opposed to the 1,000 marines in one standard Codex-compliant chapter. This was justified by Guillamen as being necessary in order to protect the Emperor. As it is the highest priority of anyone within the Imperium to protect the Emperor, it wasn’t hard at all to convince the other chapters that this was indeed acceptable in these times of crisis. Squads were indicated by roman numerals on the right pauldron together with their combat role, the chapter badge is displayed on the left pauldron and as stated before companies are indicated on the left kneepad.

  Not much else is known about the Sagittarum Shields other than they work closely with the Sagittarum Guard and they hold a special love for Roman aesthetics, adding horsehair attachments to their helmets and leather and metal or cloth drapes, just like the Custodians and Ultramarines. Their chapter master takes orders directly from the captain-general of the Custodians: Trajann Valoris. This of course with the intent of coordinating the protection of the Emperor to its highest efficiency. To this very day the Sagittarum Shields stand guard atop the Imperial Sanctum, being ready at all times to open fire with their bolter guns on xenos, traitors and demons alike.

Additional note: I am still new to the whole Warhammer 40k franchise and thus several things might be wrong in this post, I do appreciate positive feedback on that, so feel free to comment. I am, however, aware that within the community and fanbase there’s now a dislike for Games Workshop and their release of the Primaris Astartes. If you are one of those people that hate them, don’t vent it in this comment section, that’s not what my illustrations are for, thank you.
