Description
Soo... I guess it's time to publish another of my OC's. She's not completely finished yet, so I'll update the bio below once she is, but for now, enjoy my unfinished bug!Origin & Influences:
Yacka is assumed to be the name for the xanthorrhoea plant (also known as grasstree) in a South Australian Aboriginal language, leading to a lush-greenish color. Kiri is a Maori name meaning "skin of a tree or fruit", also leading to greenish colors, as well as referencing her semblance. Linwood originates from a surname which was originally from a place name meaning "stream forest" in Old English.
She also has multiple reference to the aboriginal ‘dreamtime’ culture.
Age:
24
Nicknames:
Linny, Buggie, Hippie, Treehugger
Colour:
Lush green.
Species:
Yacka is a Spiny Leaf Insect faunus. This outs itself visually in spikes on her arms, which contain a small concentration of paralyzing poison, making hugs quite unpleasant at times. She also owns a tail that resembles a set of leaves, which she keeps curled up more often than not. She has naturally small pupils as well.
Appearance:
Yacka is a female of average height, standing at 5’6 and of usual weight. She has wide hips, wider than her shoulders even, and surprisingly strong arms thanks to her drumm. Her skin is chocolate brown in color, accompanied by minty body paint on her arms and on her tummy. She has pink hues with almost dreadlock-like forest green hair.
Her clothing exists out of leafy wrist and leg bands. In family tradition she wears an orange headband, top and skirt over her self-made lime suit, which leaves an opening on her tummy as well as one for her leafy tail.
Personality:
Yacka is person with a very poor sense of direction. This can be taken both literally as figuratively. She’s easily lost, not knowing what to do, which is why she’s very attached to things she knows and is familiar with. She’s far from eager to try new things, whether it be a new path to the supermarket or directly meeting new people. Walking into things blindly are things she would never do. Another way she outs that is her attachment to details, and almost has a photographic memory to aid her in that. Her main outlet for her attachments, however, are rituals and habits.
She goes so far with them that she can’t do things without having them done first. She would refuse to shower, or even eat, if someone doesn’t give her the chance to do her rituals. The main purpose of all her rituals are to bring her closer to herself, others and the earth. It’s like a guide to her that makes her understand much more of the world she lives in, even if the stories behind them may not make sense to others.
Still, she would never force her habits and ideas on them. She knows that her way of life can be viewed as unnecessary to those around her, so she doesn’t lose any respect for those who don’t. However, she does greatly appreciate when others do decide to follow her in her traditions, even if just once. The opposite is also true, try to stop her, or be very judgemental about them, and she will become angry, aggressive, even.
Thanks to her upbringing, she strongly believes in the trust and acceptance towards others. She would never disrespect anything or anyone without given a proper reason to, even grimm, though on a different level.
As a fighter her respectful nature shines as well, she’d never play dirty, and wouldn’t tolerate others to do so either. She generally enjoys a good spar, seeing it as manner to have fun, especially with her weapon. Grimm are a slight exception to that, as, while she accepts their existence, however doesn’t tolerate them hurting that of others. She kills mercyfull, trying to kill without inflicting pain or to relieve pain as fast as possible.
Backstory:
Yacka originates from a small community within the wild of Menagerie, descendant of a small group of faunus that decided to retreat closer to nature after the conflict caused by the faunus rights evolution. Despite the fact that they mostly provide for themselves, the rest of Remnant was not alien to them, seeing no trouble with interacting with other lifestyles as long as one had respect for one another's. Still, their, and thus Yacka's, contact with modern world technology was limited. Instead, a more primitive life brought them closer to the earth itself, strenghtening their beliefs and values. Yacka, being raised in the midst of this culture, took part in it as well. Yacka never really had a care for the world, as long as her community was fed and safe, she would be too. It was a simple life in a small world.
However, Yacka's perception changed when a small news team ended up in her community's home. Stranded as they were making a documentary about the continent, they asked the leaders for assistence. The team ended up staying in the community for a while, until they'd gathered enough footage about Menagerie as a whole. In the mean time, Yacka learned a lot about Remnant outside of the faunus continent, slowly becoming curious and yearning to see it for herself. A few years later, Yacka decided to leave her home and go experience Remnant first hand.
Despite coming from an isolated community, she still has knowledge of the modern world’s technology thanks to the stories she’s heard all the time, even if she hasn’t seen any of it, or is used to living in the middle of it for that matter.
Aura and Semblance:
Yacka's semblance is referred to as Nature Spirit. it allows her to change her outer body structure into one similar to a plant. Her skin becomes bark-like, making it much harder and more durable, while her hair and tail resemble leaf-like structures. Because it only changes the outer body structure, Yacka keeps her vital organs and skeleton, however her muscles do change. It isn’t a very expensive semblance, surprisingly enough, only needing a moderate aura cost to activate it, and a small drain to maintain it.
While it doesn't have a lot of offensive potential, it’s optimal for camouflage, and boosts her otherwise weak defenses immensely. Although obvious, it should be said that the camouflage only works in nature-filled environments and the bark isn’t unbreakable. The only notable drawback is that, because of her muscles are also being affected by her semblance, her speed and mobility is slightly limited.
Fighting Style:
Yacka's fighting style relies mostly on dust, whether it be for elemental attacks or to use the sharp edge of the crystals for bashing attacks. She fights most often in close quarters, and is rather predictable once you've seen her perform a couple of time. She's attached to certain tactics and moves, which she uses to counter her opponents. A first fight against her is difficult thanks to her ability to counter very well, however a second will be much easier thanks to said predictability. She's hard to convince to try another tactic, actually needing to be forced on the brink of defeat untill she would.
Weapon:
Yacka’s weapon is a dust-infused didgeridoo called Earth’s Melody.
It mainly contains wind dust, lots of it, which assists her in using the weapon, as well as enabling her to use it as an instrument. It strengthens her blows to the point of using it as an attack. Aside from wind dust, it also enjoys earth dust, and accents of water and fire dust.
Earth’s Melody serves another purpose, that of a blowpipe. Again supported by the wind dust, Yacka is able to fire almost arrow-sized darts at opponents. The tips are either covered in dust or filled with paralyzing poison, storing enough to paralyse someone’s limb entirely after two shots.
The weapon doesn’t have any transformations, and is often carried in a camo-patterned duffel bag on Yacka’s back. The bag also holds her darts and space for her clothing.
Trivia:
Rituals:
- When meeting a new person, she touches foreheads with them. This symbolizes not only meeting a new body, but a new mind as well.
- Before eating, she clenches her fists and places them against each other, palms touching. She then points her thumbs up next to each other and bites them. It’s like a sacrifice to her, a way for her to show her remorse for feeding of other living creatures.
- When she takes a bath, she uses ice cold water, believing that as the heat leaves her body, so do her wrongdoings and feels more clean than she would with warm water.
