"Wait," Christian said to the nurse. "I will come back tomorrow."

"No," Scarlet snapped, shrugging Christian away and sounding more like Scarlet. "I can take care of myself." Christian stopped in his tracks and Scarlet pushed through the hospital doors. James let out a sigh of relief.

"Wow, no wonder she hasn't got many friends," Jena whispered.

"She's had a difficult life," James replied, rememering the story Scarlet had told me about how her own tribe rejected her.

"How did you two meet?" Jena asked, her curiosity winning out. "You seem very close to her."

"Well, yeah," James replied. "I mean; she saved my life and gave me a real home."

"Do you... love her?" Jena asked with a hint of sorrow in her voice.

"Yes," James replied, but the realized Jena's meaning. "But not that way. She's more like the big sister I never had."

"Oh, OK," Jena replied, more to herself, sounding a little relieved.
