Description
Faith crashed on the couch. The day had been exhausting. All she wanted to do was close her eyes and fall asleep. However, laying on her back, all she could see was the skylight of her apartment. The place was nothing fancy, not even close to her room back home. She would never have picked it if she wasn’t also Silver Sentinel. The skylight made it easy for her to get in and out of her place. It was cloudy tonight and despite her fatigue, the skies beckoned.A bright flash of light, a click of a button and a few seconds later, the city extended below her. Her exhaustion had gone. So had the ache in her wrist from too much time spent the last couple of days filing her department’s records at the hospital. Even the cobwebs of drowsiness had cleared. So she did what she always did, launch off in a random direction.
Tonight, it was the old part of town. No one hung around there this late at night and slowly but steadily, the sparkling lights dimmed and grew sparse below her. She took her mind off the flying and concentrated on her senses. Her senses were the same as regular people, except hers grew sharper the more she focussed on them. As she focussed on the darkness below, her eyes adapted to see into it. She let her hearing pick up in the lack of traffic noises. It wasn’t long before she heard someone yelling at another person. By the time she followed it with her eyes, she saw a couple of men chasing a woman down an alley.
She cursed herself. She kept telling herself to slow down, but when flying, she had this compulsion to fly fast. Right now, that meant precious seconds first slowing down enough so she could turn around fast. In many ways, flying was like driving a car. What concerned her however, was after the initial shout of surprise from the woman, she had gone silent. She pushed herself forward and used the grunts of the men to locate the right alleyway. She was ready to hate herself for being late.
Except, when she rounded the corner to the alley, the woman in question who had seemed defenceless and vulnerable at first glance demolished the first attacker with precise attacks, finishing him off with a well placed kick. His friend, returning to the fight, was dispatched just as easily. Faith had never seen such precise attacks, from her own experience of watching martial artists or from her study of the human body. She hung around in the air for a moment in some state of shock when the woman spoke up.
‘Show’s over. If you want a piece of me, you’ll need to come down here,’ said the masked woman as she twirled the baseball bat in her hand.
Faith sometimes forgot that she was still new in Bayside City and not everyone would know who she was. Also, this woman was not dressed in some costume, just street clothes, albeit skimpy street clothes and a cloth mask that covered her face with a symbol of a butterfly on it. ‘I’m sorry, I did not realise there were other superheroines in this city,’ she replied.
‘Do I look like a fucking superheroine to you?’ replied the woman as she casually kicked one of the men who seemed like he was stirring.
Silver Sentinel cast a glance at the clothes of the two men. They were dressed in gang colours she had seen a few times before. She quickly put two and two together. ‘You’re out this late around these parts, dressed like that. You were baiting them, weren’t you.’
‘What’s it to you? Planning to arrest me for assault and battery?’
‘Perhaps. Or you can tell me why,” Faith replied. She descended to the street and stood in front of the masked woman. She had a good idea but she wanted to hear it herself.
The woman sighed. She hated explaining herself, but for the first time in what seemed like a long time, Tomoe felt like she should. ‘A girl was assaulted by this gang in this area last week. I was told there were more in the past. The cops arrest who they can get their hands on, but either they are back on the street or there’s new gang members to continue the ‘good work’. They had laid low after last week’s incident, but it seems they are back to their old ways.’
Faith gave the two ‘victims’ a once over. Bruises, a couple of dislocations, and possibly a concussion or two, but she could not be certain. ‘Well, I hope you plan to call an ambulance to pick them up,’ she added as she turned to the woman.
‘I plan to leave them naked in a dumpster for the cops to find,’ she replied looking towards a couple of security cameras on the walls.
Faith followed her glance. For all practical purposes, it would look like the gang members chased after the wrong target. She smiled. ‘Do you have a name?’
‘Not one I’m giving you.’
‘Fine. I’ll just call you Butterfly then,’ replied the superheroine, ‘I guess if you decide to stick around, we might see more of each other.’ Faith knew enough from her own experience when starting out to not overstay her welcome. She smiled and took off into the sky.
‘Butterfly, eh?’ mused Tomoe. ‘Alwin would be proud,’ she thought to herself before turning to the two men at her feet. ‘Now why the fuck did I commit to stripping them naked? Fuckers will probably brag about that.’

The fourth member of LEGS, I had intended to post about her somewhere near the end of last year / early Jan, but I was undecided about her backstory so it went on hold and then on the back burner. While stuck with no space to even twiddle my thumbs while commuting over the last couple of weeks, I decided how to wrap up her story and details.
Butterfly is meant to be a street level 'hero'.
While it is VGal who (unknowingly) encourages Faith to return to being Silver Sentinel , I figured VGal might be a little too chirpy for Tomoe to even think of being a heroine, let alone working with others. Faith on the other hand seemed like a better bet to randomly bump into the mysterious masked woman who beats up gang members.
This also introduces the Golden Boys (who started as a gag), my seemingly inept gang who last appeared, well, under Nocturne's boot:
