These tools are your friends. Use them.
Other than that, it remains to be said that 90% of getting a good photo manip is spent in looking for the right source images; higher res is always good obviously, but also look for aspects such as light direction and similarities in the positioning of the photo parts you want to use.
Hmm, that sounded slightly like I condone the use of friends...
