Dear Momma,

I hope everyone in the family is well. We have had a bit of bad luck here in West Virginia. Leroy lost his job in the mines and we had to move out of our house and sell the boat. Currently we are temporarily living in a beat up old trailer in the back of Leroy’s father’s house. It is totally disgusting and now I know where the saying “trailer trash” comes from. But rent is free and we are able to save most of Leroy’s unemployment check and not touch our savings. Leroy said it will only be for a little while before he gets hired back; “temporary slow down due to people divesting in fossil fuels” is what the company said. Leroy was one of 50 miners to receive the layoff notice. Hopefully we’ll get a Republican president in the next election who is more sympathetic about the coal industry, and West Virginia Coal Company will be able to open up Mine #4 again.

Give my best to everyone and don’t worry about us — as you always remind me, love and God smooth out all rough roads as well as unforeseen bends and curves in life.
